Hey Canada, a lot of Americans are right there with you.
Cool. So do something about it.
It’s not just Trump. It’s the Tea Party and Bush, too. We’ve spent the last quarter century looking over our shoulder waiting for the next catastrophe that Americans will cause and we’re sick of it.
Honestly I’m sick of American arrogance too, the American empire should balkanize and die
I’m sure that there is plenty of arrogance from Idaho to Georgia… the electoral college has given way too much of a voice for the flyover states even though they are the minority. I can guarantee you that the coastal communities in the States hate what our country has become as much as you Canucks do. Western Washington/Oregon/California have hated the maga movement from the beginning, unfortunately billionaires use it to pocket tax dollars left and right, and the simps in purple states are down for the billionaire cause despite the fact that they will spend hundreds of millions of dollars to elect officials who are against a universal healthcare bill.
Yeah, well said. I still think that America should balkanize
Are you also rooting for Alberta’s secession?
Nope
Over 70% of the country wants him gone, but from an outsider’s perspective, all they see is the fact that we voted him in.
It’s going to take a very long time to undo the damage caused by Trump. Nobody is ever going to trust the United States again, unless we put safeguards in place to ensure that someone like him can never gain this level of unchecked power ever again. And I just don’t see that happening in any of our lifetimes.
You’ll never undo it. America’s pre-Trump position in the world was due to the fact that it was the only major power left standing after World War II. After the rest of the world rebuilt itself America was entrenched enough to maintain its position through inertia. When that inertia’s gone, it won’t come back.
As a Canadian, it’s Trump
…AND his supporters
…AND you can throw in Christofascists
…AND Christian fundamentalists.
So since Westboro for me, personally.
started way before that, at least Bush for millennials.
I mean, OP said it started with Westboro. WBC formed in the '50s and really started getting headlines in the '90s. So, before the Bush millenials grew up under.
Hey a lot of Americans hate America because of Trump, too.
I’d also say most of the world hates America because of Trump. He’s a global parasite.
I hated America before it was cool to hate America.
I’d like to say the same, but it’s been cool to hate America longer than I’ve been alive where I’m from.
It’s been cool to hate America as long as I’ve been alive too, in America.
It did get less cool around 9/11, but I nave stopped hate my it here. All the flags on trucks after that only made it worse.
The fact that we (allied democracies) can’t trust USA anymore became clear to me under George W. Bush first term as President.
So I’d say about 21 years ago.Bush W was when I realized the US was on a serious downturn.
Especially when he was elected for a 2nd term.
I am starting to hate it because of America’s tepid reaction to Trump
If America saw what America was doing to America then America would invade America and liberate America.

Not a single country on Earth that likes the US. Only the US claims to like the US, and even then it’s more propaganda fuel than anything.
except israel and russia, which only it is convenient currently.
Are you saying no country that likes the US is rael?
Yea, it’s not just Canadians. Everybody hates the US.
I understand why the Taliban were so miffed now.
One thing that’s really frustrating is that in other countries where democracy is in danger you see huge protests in the streets.

That gives the distinct impression that even if the average American doesn’t support what Trump is doing, they don’t really oppose it enough to bother shutting down the country.
I ask myself for quite some time now: where are Americas young people? In most countries, if something goes as wrong as in America at the moment, the first who respond with protests are the students. Just check out India. But in the US there are only a few local protest about the middle east. No mass protests, not even discussions as far as I can tell. Why is that?
America is an experiment in how far you can push individualism. Collective action, unions and the like are suppressed compared to other countries. They’ll have to relearn that individual responsibility has limits and collective action is still important.
They took to the streets when their wealth was endangered though. So there are reasons to get Americans to protest. The rest of the world simply isn’t one of them.
I think there are two main reasons. The first is that things simply haven’t gotten bad enough. It’s true, there is a health care crisis killing tens of thousands a year, rampant human rights violations in ICE concentration camps, brazen corruption in the administration, etc. But for most of the uneducated and uninformed middle class, these things don’t directly affect their daily lives.
The second reason is that the mass indoctrination campaign concerning American exceptionalism has been immensely successful. So while many Americans agree some things could be improved, they are unsure of what those things are because they also still believe the US is one of the best places in the world to live, even as the US has steadily tumbled down the quality-of-life rankings and now arguably ranks below the likes of Estonia and Slovenia. The belief in exceptionalism has fostered a rather meek and servile attitude towards the government.
And that’s why American exceptionalism and any other kind of national exceptionalism needs to die
It will take a economic depression, mass unemployment, civil unrest, oil prices going to the moon, civil war, hyperinflation and mass famine to kill American exceptionalism
The focus on petrol prices and inflation are, to me, also curious aspects of American culture.
For one, one of the major problems in the US economy is that petrol prices are too low. In general, to optimize productivity one should aim to subsidize those activities that generate positive externalities, and tax those that generate negative externalities. The use of fossil fuels - a heavily polluting activity - should then be adequately taxed. No top-tier economy has petrol prices as low as in the US, they are closer to 10 USD a gallon (in freedom units). The undertaxation of fossil fuels has also led to greater sensitivity to price fluctuations on the global markets.
Inflation is a curious fixation since the US, unlike many other countries, never experienced hyperinflation. So why the obsession? I suspect one factor might be that the US has few collective wage negotiations, whereas here inflation is more or less automatically priced into wages. What then happens is that workers who stay in their job have their wages steadily eroded (i.e., their employer simply pays them a lower real wage over time), but then if they switch jobs, they attribute the wage increase to their career advancement rather than inflation, which increases the price of labour just as it does the price of goods (if due to money losing value).
theres also enough wage-wise to not protest, plus still food for even the poorest, and social programs, aka welfare. pay even working a min wage is better than most places in the world.
Okay, “most” of the world, sure, but that is not a very high bar. Yes, Americans are much better off than people in the Central African Republic, Myanmar or Venezuela.
You prove my point. In fact, US people working a minimum wage job have a much lower net income (including transfers) than those living on the lowest possible unemployment benefits in top-tier economies, who by the way also have access to adequate health care, top-tier education (without bullshit class-based admission procedures or segregation), much better public transport, etc.
heaps if people are upset he’s not going hard enough with ICE
its a double edged sword. they went to hard and killed 2 citizens(white people) people in jan and feb, the MSM had since had to stop reporting on ice activity to stop the inciting of more protests, and it worked, thats why the conservative bumpkins think its not happening enough.
tens of thousands a year is just a rounding error in statesia.
After the Civil rights and anti-Vietnam protests of the 60s and 70s, public policy changed to quietly hoover up all of the hippies via the drug war and cut funding for universities and colleges. That, plus McCarthyism and the oil shortage lead to Boomers being one of the most conservative generations in American history. They, along with the government, pushed this idea of freedom through self-reliance and hard work. Those were always the undercurrent of America’s politics, but now there were basically no dissenting voices (cause they were all in jail for possession or for being a commie).
The next generations of leftist voices were crushed by the heel of capitalism. Since college and university cost more, individuals participating either needed to already have money (thus be more likely to swallow the “individual effort” freedom narrative) or needed to take out loans (thus needed to keep their mouth shut, since student loans are “forever loans” that can’t be forgiven via bankruptcy and they needed employment to pay them back). High school and lower education was stripped of “commie” talking points, meaning the sole narrative taught to young people before college was “America is the best cause of our freedom” nonsense. Unions were taken during this time with “right to work” laws, handing more unchecked power to corporations.
Right now in America, there’s a resurgence of leftist voices, but these are students with no masters. We have to rebuild the organizations to support these efforts, but that takes time. In the interim, you’ll see mass protests break out from time to time when things get bad, but our lack of generational knowledge on how to utilize these efforts means they’ll come and go fairly quickly as individuals are unsure of what comes next. And before those protests can solidify around a single message or platform, mass media will come in to give them a shit one, or twist the actual one to lose public support. That’s why the George Floyd protests were big and loud, but didn’t really drive any consistent goals. The “defund” narrative was constructed around the movement before it could actually decide that was its goal, and that was too an extreme for position for the average American in that moment (think the Overton shifted on that, now), killing the momentum the movement was gaining.
Another thing is that the gov’t targets leaders of these movements and finds a way to put them in jail or kill them. Meaning being the face of the movement is basically guaranteed to get you killed or silenced. So none of these modern protests have true leaders (not single strong men, mind, but actual decision making bodies in general), making it hard to quickly organize messaging and actions. Putting them even more flat-footed for when the next moment arises.
Also, any popular protest in the US that doesn’t include rioting gets basically no air time. The George Floyd protests went on for months after the news stopped covering them. Minneapolis’ response to operation metro surge outlasted the operation, but you don’t hear about it being celebrated.
Don’t come in here with a rational examination of material conditions in America! We’re here to be Mad at the Lazy Americans!
Yeah, in the US, the protestors are mostly older people. I think maybe they’re too anxious and don’t want to jeopardize their future careers? Maybe they saw the concerted effort to ruin pro-Palestine protestor’s lives? Most companies do background checks (I’ve had to get a background check to work at Burger King), and even a single arrest on your record is enough to have you automatically filtered out. Maybe they saw that the BLM protests didn’t really cause the government to change much. Idk. It is weird though.
And maybe most importantly, they’re too distracted to be politically motivated at all. They have ephemeral anger and reactions that fizzle out as soon as they form. The next scandal, the next season on Netflix, the next meme. They aren’t given time to think enough to care. By design.
it was actually occupy wallstreet, they saw there wasnt much going on, so nothing must be bad.
Tbh here in india as well we all feel the same way. We have been fucked since all the way back in 2014 and even before that tbh but lets not get into that. And idk about the US but a lot of people here do not protest because most people literally work on daily wages and are shit scared of police brutality and losing their jobs. A single FIR can ruin your life even if it is a fake one. And the “government”(regime) is very good at dishing out polarizing narratives with its humongous IT cell that constantly shifts blame to minorities such as muslims, christians and lower caste Hindus, and immigrants from neighboring states.
The recent protest were a result a lot of things going right. As paper leaks are a pan India issue and effected everyone from lower to upper caste and of every religion. The amount of frustration simply outpaced any government narratives. As well as a very well organized movement by educated people and a very high profile engineer taking part in the protest. It is still a very hopeful thing overall. But thousands still die from basic issues like contaminated ground water, toxic air, a power grid incapable of handling modern 45C + summers (ACs are still a luxury here the average person and classroom does not have). Endless concrete hell where you can just die by a brick falling on you from a construction site in the middle of a busy road. Bridges just randomly collapsing and what not. And there are zero protests anywhere. Even if there are, all the media is owned by the government and you do not see it enough for it to get large enough.
Even rn they r actively arresting students from protests for no reasons at all and used violence against them back in July 20 to again just sow enough fear where people simply accept being miserable than dealing with the state.
As long as people believe risking their current way of life is not a good trade off there simply can not be a mass protest movement. The paper leak issue worked coz it already has about 1% of chance of you making it and if even that is bought by money, students have literally nothing as there are no mid level industrial jobs here. You are either working an office MNC/Doctoral job or are working in a field under disguised unemployment or washing dishes. Hence we got so many people out.
One of my professors was actively involved during the civil rights era and her words have really stuck with me. She said, speaking directly to our class, if you kids were in the civil rights era you wouldn’t last a second. I fear she was completely correct.
“Yet here you are with a secure job, maybe even tenure, assets, established support networks, and a platform, doing fuck all about it while expecting us to flush our education down the toilet while still saddled with debt during the worst economy in decades, to take all the risk of starting a revolution for you.”
If that’s true then it’s the fault of the generation that raised them. Saying that as a ~40 year old.
I also wonder who the hell she was looking at when she said that, because did she sleep through the campus encampments in protest of the Gaza genocide that got violently cracked down on? Does she think her generation came back to college to do that?
Their infrastructure prevents protest
Why is that? Because you’re completely in the dark. Either your media don’t report, you don’t bother to research, you’re an idiot, or all 3.
When 8 million Americans protest nationwide in our largest ever protest, and you completely ignore it, I ask myself for quite some time: where is our international solidarity partners? All they do is spread falsehoods about lack of protest here while looking down on us.
Jesus dude, why so hostile? There’s nothing inherently wrong with not knowing enough about something.
where is our international solidarity partners?
Solidarity with the nation currently being aggressive toward various instances of its “allied” countries? I can’t see how it’s reasonable to expect any one citizen of those countries to give any amount of support to the nation currently threatening their home’s stability. There’s no practical reason to do anything more than reduce its interactions with said country for the sake of its own citizens’ livelihoods. Global relations are a matter of give and take, and right now all the US is doing is taking.
Not surprising at all. Look at how many convinced themselves to stay home the one time they couldve prevented this shitstorm.
And those non-voters are still patting each other’s backs.
Here on Lemmy, even.
Here on Lemmy, especially
Suspiciously often with a “.ml” domain ending for whatever reason
We did have huge protests in multiple cities. I’m not sure why you expect them to result in immediate change when that typically takes years to happen. Hungary was under Orban for almost 20 years and they didn’t even force him out with a protest. Serbia hasn’t changed. Slovakia hasn’t changed. The list goes on.
It doesn’t happen overnight or over a week. You’re basically demanding that we overthrow the government because we didn’t like the election results and it shouldn’t be surprising that people aren’t ready to do that. It takes a lot more than what Trump’s done to get people to that point.
We did have huge protests in multiple cities
Once? Many months ago?
That’s why I specifically talked about shutting things down.
You’re basically demanding that we overthrow the government because we didn’t like the election results
No, I’m demanding that you prove that democracy matters to you by shutting things down until you get your democracy back.
There were hundreds of protests this year and just year, it wasn’t once. If you’re just going to lie about reality then I’m not going to engage with you, because I guarantee you wouldn’t apply this same ridiculous standard to your own country. Especially considering Canada was ready to elect their own racist fascists until Trump ran his mouth.
Get our democracy back? My state just had an election and we have full Dem control of our government. States run our elections, not Trump. But you’re telling me it’s gone? The doomer shit is just delusional.
There were hundreds of protests this year
Yes, the US is a big, spread-out country.
How many protests were there in DC? Did any of them succeed in shutting the city down – you know, the way that other protests in other capital cities were shut down when their democracy was threatened?
Canada was ready to elect their own racist fascists
Explain to me how Pierre Poilievre is, in any way, comparable to Trump.
My state just had an election and we have full Dem control of our government
Great, and I assume the federal government has no impact on your day-to-day life?
I’d wager that most folks in the US can’t afford the plane ticket or multiple day trip it’d take to go to DC for a protest.
How many protests were there in DC? Did any of them succeed in shutting the city down
Oh, the capital already shut down by occupying federal troops for a year? …Yeah they did (and are) protesting and resisting

Explain to me how Pierre Poilievre is, in any way, comparable to Trump.
Ah so now “not Trump” is an acceptable standard, thus the Overton window shifts
Great, and I assume the federal government has no impact on your day-to-day life?
Not sure what point you’re trying to make here. Yes, obviously funding and aid cuts hurt everyone. Yes core federal institutions are being dismantled and looted. But despite what you might think, most Americans have very little tangible interaction with federal resources. Say your social security check stops coming in the mail or your Medicare coverage is cut. Who can you go to protest?
Beyond Washington D.C. + military bases + hubs in major cities, offices and personnel are sparse and scattered. For my (relatively populated) area, the nearest federal government property is either a local post office or 1+ hour drive to some small field offices in the city. For me to get anywhere near any prominent elected federal official or department head would be missing multiple days of work and hundreds of dollars in transportation. It turns out it’s hard to organize sustained protests in those conditions when over 50% of the population lives paycheck to paycheck.
Oh, the capital already shut down by occupying federal troops for a year? …Yeah they did (and are) protesting and resisting
Did you miss the question “How many?” I’m not saying there have never been any protests. I’m saying that compared to countries that Canadians respect, the number of protests in the US shows that Trump’s destruction of democracy isn’t a big deal to Americans.
Ah so now “not Trump” is an acceptable standard, thus the Overton window shifts
Did you realize you’re replying to a post called “The verdict is in: Canadians hate America thanks to Trump”?
Not sure what point you’re trying to make here.
Lies.

Which is why we hate the entire US, not just tRump.
John Galbraith’s book Culture of Contentment will help explain why
https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691171654/the-culture-of-contentment
It’s not until people are very desperate; Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India and even then we have Animal Farm as a cautionary tale
look at Ukraine, student protestors were being shot and killed in the Maiden uprising, Belarus similarly albeit theirs failed.
Our society has been designed so that taking even an hour off to vote or protest means no food on the table.
Could that with the critical mass who don’t give a shit and, well, yeah, no movement.
General strike just cannot happen because of that, so violent revolution is the only next step but even that is unlikely.
Our society has been designed so that taking even an hour off to vote or protest means no food on the table.
And you think that’s not the case in Hungary or Hong Kong?
it only works if everyone is affected equally, in america people still have food, some are still paid highly enough not to do much, and people still have things like welfare, if govt strips that away there will definitely be mass unrest. republicans/dems still have those things plus a job. HK people enjoyed freedom from ccp rule for decades, but since ccp tried exert thier rule, the protests came out.
Nah, it will happen. All it takes is a spark when tensions are high enough (they aren’t yet).
Our society has been designed so that taking even an hour off to vote or protest means no food on the table.
And you think that’s not the case in Hungary or Hong Kong?
propaganda also have convinced protestors as a nuisance to thier daily commute, and “disruptive” plus its villinized as lazy, jobless people on both sides. The MSMs also dont report much on it at all to give it more attention, since the news is mostly owned by republicans. thats why there isnt cohesion. unless both rs and ds, lost thier jobs as a result of trump there wont be any protests.
8 million Americans protested at over 3,300 No Kings events nationwide on Saturday March 28, the largest single-day protest in American history. Source
I know the only goal here is to shit on the US but there are plenty of ways to do that on legitimate points without making up absolute bullshit, so please eat a nice fat American dick with this nonsense.
One protest, 4 months ago.
Yeah, that’s definitely going to defeat fascism.
Spotted this in the Hong Kong one 😄

Thx Obama.
Obama had the power to nationalize the banks and arrest the people who engineered the crisis. But instead let them go.
Yeah, this unfortunately. Barack Obama is a f*CKING disappointment
Somewhat. I don’t think he’s a COMPLETE disappointment. I mean he did kill Bin Laden and, while it was a pale shadow of what it could have been, he did oversee the most comprehensive reform to health insurance seen in at least a generation. Before him? You were fucked if you had ANY preexisting condition whatsoever.
He delivered a captured market to the most evil people in the world, STARTED the drone kill list, extra judicially killed at least one American, expanded FISA, obliterated however many fucking wedding parties and shit.
And idk if you’ve noticed, but the healthcare system in amerikkka has all but stopped functioning. We pay premiums and cannot get appointments.
Delusional obama fluff nonsense.
Well to* be fair, Obama only had control of both the senate and the house for his first 72 days. Enough time to get some things done, but not a lot.
But I agree that he could have done more with the power he did hold throughout his presidency, as Trump has shown. Obama could have went buckwild with the executive orders. But alas, hindsight is 20:20.
Yeah, that’s why Barack Obama is a disappointment
I know but the point I’m making is that it’s not his fault. I mean the guy basically campaigned on being a centrist.
Many Americans do, too.
Yeah, Same here honestly
I dont think most americans know whats happening. It’ll be way too late when they wake up
I’ve been wondering this myself.
I’m some sort of weirdo who likes solar panels and EV’s and thinks people should be allowed to be people no matter the color of their skin or the plumbing in their pants, which makes me some sort of commie hippie freak because I live in rural Oklahoma.
And there seems to be a lot of effort aimed at keeping people in this deep red state unaware of all that is happening, although gas prices are higher than normal here (I saw $3.79/gal this morning I think) amd groceries are getting expensive. But none of this is really mentioned. As far as the local news is concerned, there is no war in Iran, Trump has everything handled, and all is well. And a great many people here, especially old people, believe it all because that is all they see.
It’s no excuse.
I think you over estimate Americans giving a crap.
They’ll give a crap when it affects them personally.
Was this still a question? I thought that ship sailed long ago, with everyone but Israel.
Ah, who am I kidding, Israel hates us, too.
Canada hasn’t been making military alliances and trade deals with every other country for the last year for nothing. They also didn’t just recall their military for nothing either. Canada’s fortifying itself in plain sight and the trump admin are too stupid to notice.
Did we recall our troopies? I wasn’t even aware of that.
Yes, we announced this week we’re winding down a lot of overseas operations and will be focusing on domestic defense operations.
Gonna be real interesting to see which way we flip if US v. Canada becomes real.
ANZUS v. The Crown
I’d hope it would be US vs the rest of the world, but I don’t have that much faith in our leadership.
The rest of the world might do sanctions but that’s it. The US has nukes, Canada doesn’t.
But it doesn’t matter. If this happened the US would be committing suicide because it would wreck the economy, create all kinds of internal strife, and we’d have thousands of Canadians sabotaging our infrastructure with no easy way to differentiate them from us. And probably a bunch of Americans joining in with them.
No doubt it’d stir the republic idea again, I wonder how much power Charles really has when it comes to Australia declaring war.
Officially he has none, but it does require assent from the Governor General still, realpolitik says he could probably force the GG into an action. It’s been done before (Whitlam’s sacking)
If you think Australia or New Zealand are joining an attack on Canada, you’re very much mistaken.
I don’t think we would (Australia) - but we’re joined at the hip to USA, our entire defense apparatus revolves around them.
Unlike Canada we don’t have the luxury of ‘the rest of NATO’ to fall back on, it’s unfortunately appeasing US interests or having no one.
UK won’t ever actually come and help us if we were in need and NZ would but it wouldn’t make much of a difference.
everyone hates america.
By “no confidence” we mean no trust. When our closest ally declares economic warfare through tariffs, threatens annexation, and blackmails the opening an international bridge, there is no trust left. Canadians are smart enough to know this won’t end after Trump is gone. It will take decades to reverse. We will develop stronger relationships with other countries, something that we should have done earlier anyway. The U.S.A. can burn their own house down - we don’t care. Just don’t try to burn ours with it.
Americans also hate America thanks to Trump.
Yeah, I can confirm this
I’ve hated America since I started becoming politically aware in the 90s.
You hate the same people we hate, Canada. Those people are broken, ignorant assholes before they are Americans. Their bullshit ruins the world for all of us.
So like, do something about it maybe?
Really quick, list what you think civilized, nonmilitary, individual folks with families should do against a 50 year systemic plan, funded with trillions and led by literal psychopaths fixed on destabilizing democracy to rebuild a fascist autocracy in their own image? Every day is a real internal struggle of what to do next. Many of us have spent decades opposing in every way typical folks can, bleeding, arrest, life threatening opposition face to face with swat teams as unarmed, untrained every day people.
Your response is not helpful. It trivializes one of the largest issues in the history of civilation with no clear solution ahead.
The point of my response is that WE are not opposed, so don’t try to make the good folks into opponents. Grow up, see the bigger picture and support. Offer solutions and plan on what your personal line will be when this all finds it’s way to you.
Whatever you though the Germans should have done to the Nazis pre-WWII. Whatever you think the Russians should do to Putin. Whatever you think Israelis should do with Netanyahu.
My grandpa fought in WWII. He never asked the Germans if they supported Hitler, though. He just dropped rocket artillery on them from a few km away.
Was the punishment of Germany for WWI not at all relevant. Not the refusal of most other nations to take in Jews when Germany tried to ship them away not relevant either?
If you were to ask me it, I would have suggested to not abjectly punish an entire nation for the actions of aristocrats and not close international boarders to refugees due to discrimination against a minority group as factors that outside nations can do.
Alternatively, Germany did need… outside intervention…
For the purposes of my point, the Treaty of Versailles and the refusal to accept refugees is irrelevant. Both examples are approaching a Heckler’s Veto, but kind of in reverse?
My point is more realpolitik: we can’t expect people to distinguish between the good americans and the bad americans in a situation where the US is hostile to the world. Honestly, I think it’s a bit late to fix that.
I also don’t really have any good solutions. Roughly 30% of any given population will always be susceptible to fascism, that’s been studied. That will always be with us. There are also strategies to prevent full fascism, but those need to be carried out consistently on a societal level.
Really quick
A national peaceful shutdown.
Unfortunately you’ve already prefaced the standard excuse, one which wouldn’t exist had enough people gone out to vote when needed. Any argument against that is disproven by the results Republican voters get in all elections around the country and what Mamdani did in its biggest city.
They’re not trivialising any response at all…the fact is, it’s American citizens that have to do something about it, one way or the other. The easiest solution is to vote. The next easiest now is peaceful shutdown.
There’s two solutions. They’ve dropped the ball on one, repeatedly. Now it’s time for the other. It’s not our job to help either; they elected him democratically, we can’t and they told us to keep our nose out of it before 2016.
Sooner or later the good folks need to unite, step up and do something. Yes, it’ll involve hardship, for many. Yes, it’s easy for us to say but we’d do something about this if and when it comes to us. This is why voting is important. But we are under no obligation to separate good Americans from bad ones in this…it’s a collective responsibility as far as outsiders are concerned.
We have grown up…it’s the US that needs to grow up and their people take their national duty seriously. As a collective.
It’s already finding our way to us, thanks to the US. They’re already inundating us with their incessant political garbage, brought to us by their conservative PACs. I note Americans are quick to call that our problem as well, on top of asking for asylum.
All this is why we are sick to death of them and their shit.
The US has utilized systemic racism to train it’s population from childhood to hate and fear each other. We aren’t able to work together because we have been programmed not to.
So, how would I organize a general strike with fascists who believe the current process is great, or are in such a compromised position (by design) that striking could literally kill them?
Your advice is like telling someone who is homeless to get a job.
Based on your argument, it’s not your job to do anything. Agreed. Hate and don’t support the US… That might help change opinions. If you want us to continue to resist… Yeah, plenty of people do and have. But telling people to essentially kill themselves because “it’s the right thing to do” is kinda some bullshit. About 40% of our nations population are hateful fascists. This is an issue that has built up over generations. Its going to take a lot more thank just trying to organize a general strike to fix it.
All the advice, if that’s what you want to call it, I gave you is entirely doable by one individual. I didn’t ask you to organise, I said ‘link up’. If I can see some people around here doing that, which I have in some of the political and world subs, I’m sure you can find it.
At no stage have I told you to kill yourself; all that is your extension on your own comments.
it’s going to take a lot more than a general strike
Well, that or pure luck through somehow getting another fair election are your two routes out. The options have run out. You either unprogram yourselves and get together to do it, get that chance at voting it out again or you go down. But at no stage have I suggested you go kill yourself nor did I put the option of civil war and the 2nd Amendment on the table (which btw we got hammered about by you lot as your way out if it ever happened).
Idk. It just seems like you’ve got excuses for everything that could possibly be a solution. Ones you don’t offer other countries, especially those you decide to attack militarily.
Edit: when I say ‘link up’, I said this to another commenter, not you. I told them as an American, I’d vote everything I could, write to friendly reps to encourage them to organise, attend protests and link up with like minded people that want to act. They’re around and some of know the protests are happening. Those protests are a start and they are a good thing; from little things, big things grow.
Just so there’s no confusion on my post.
Whatever helps you sleep at night I guess.
Lol the “WhY aReN’t ThEy dOinG aNyThInG tO StOp It” people never, ever have an answer to a reasoned response like this.
They also never notice the identical moves being made in their own governments. Like the afd in Germany of all places.
No, those people never have an answer to when it’s them that should be doing something.
Go to any thread about Ukraine, it’s why aren’t Russians doing anything to stop it. Same with Israel, same with Mexico (why are they leaving instead of fixing their country?), etc.
In this particular case the US is about to become the center of the new bad guys of WW3, and Americans are, in fact, not doing enough to stop it.
Curious, what would you recommend the Americans do?
A general strike. Actually disruptive protest that hits supply lines or commerce. Actual resistance actions that people in oppressive governments elsewhere have employed.
I said “Fuck it” and left. Took a 75% pay cut and left everything behind. The system dies when people abandon it.
No regrets.
Most folks don’t have your privilege and are trapped in that shitty fucking hell hole. It’s great that you made it out but the majority of those who are suffering have no such option.
I do recognize I’m lucky and it’s true that the majority don’t have the option, but I think a lot more do than realize it, especially if you’re willing to fill a need for labor in a country that’s got a shortage.
It’s definitely a path worth exploring.
I wouldn’t call taking a 75% pay cut ‘privilege’. That’s a big sacrifice. But I get your point.

It’s fucking up your world too, and you’re a border away. We’re not for the same reason you’re not.
Thats the dumbest argument Ive seen in a while. Its your country, not mine. Canada is not doing enough but at least we’re trying to economically distance ourselves. Its not our job to fix your shit. Thats some victim blaming shit right there.
You guys on the other hand are just letting your government trample on you.
As per my point, this is why Canadians dont respect Americans. You guys complain and do nothing.
Also the fact that you immediately go to ‘we cant shoot them so what do you want us to do?’ is the most American dumbfuck response.
Yeah they’re lashing out.
They want someone, anyone, other than themselves taking care of it so they can Netflix and chill. That’s why straight up, they refer to the problems their PACs are bringing to our countries, and what we are doing about that.
These are people who think electing Trump should qualify them asylum in other countries and they get very nasty when that is argued down.
They will avoid whatever responsibility they can and push that onto others.
Yeah let me go get myself shot and leave my family with no means of support because some armchair badass on the internet said I’m chicken and they totally would have kicked Trump’s ass if it had happened there
Sooner or later they will have to do something as a collective or some will just get dragged out of their own homes and shot anyway. Isn’t that actually happening?
Never once did I say you were a chicken so stop making shit up and stop making it about one person.
What I would be doing if I was American would be voting every single election I could, participating in any protests I can, writing to the progressive reps who are the only ones likely to listen and linking up with like any minded people at the protests and elsewhere that I can. That’s what you can do and if enough did, you’d probably have enough to pull off a national shutdown. There’s people out there trying to string something together and you can find them if you look.
Here’s some facts on it though: they elected Trump (twice) democratically, so we can’t help. They told us to mind our own business across several platforms before 2016, now they expect us not just to help out or even take care of the entire thing, but to welcome them with open arms in asylum from…an elected government. The increased problems with right wing lunacy we’re suffering are brought to us and financially backed by their political scene. They are where they are because of years of neglecting the vote and that includes institutionalising the oppressive systems they now deal with. They cannot use the 2nd Amendment, the thing they used to remind us for years how oppressed we were when they weren’t, to get out of it. The excuses they expect us to accept for it, they don’t offer other nations. They, like Churchill said, will take every other option but the correct one until they’re left with no option.
You got no alternative anyway outside of pure luck. You’ll either have to or there’ll be authorities dragging you out of your houses anyway. We’ve seen how it ends. The sooner you all get together and do it the easier it’ll be.
I’ve done all of the things that you said you would be doing, as have many of us (many more than voted for Trump). Our election system is broken. Not seeming to understand that comes off as victim-blaming. That’s why we’re defensive about the “dO sOmEtHiNg” posts. WE FUCKING DID.
It’s kind of like how Canada has systematically killed indigenous people. I’m sure plenty of people don’t/didn’t like it, but it still happens through systematic neglect and violence of that group. The US was able to utilize systematically racism to a much broader scale, and is now using it to push through fascism.
I mean, California lost gun rights under a conservative government that wanted to disarm blacks. But the country still thinks that liberals made it happen… Somehow…
Regardless, it is our country, it is our problem, but it will fuck us all. So any useful advice would be appreciated, rather than just try harder.
Except when people give advice the answer is usually one of the following:
-
That wont work in America because America is different™.
-
You dont understand, people are struggling to make ends meet so it isnt practical.
The truth is Americans have never been interested in advice from others and sure arent now. You need to act. Literally anything is better than whats happened so far.
The bottom line is this. If you arent willing to make sacrifices to keep your freedom, you better start accepting your overlords. This has been true throughout human history and will be true for Americans.
