The comic leaves out the whole “joining the right server and communities for you” part. If nobody tells you before joining, then you see a bunch of horrible stuff. If someone does tell you before joining, then it’s a daunting prospect.

Yes. Filter lists to subscribe to would be a big help to new users.

Especially if we could generate a default one that just includes some kind of median block/filter set generated from previous choices across users on the current instance.

Then a new user could just make one early choice: “Automatically filter unpopular content” or “see everything”.

To be fair, I see a bit of ragebait occasionally on the fediverse too.

I didn’t do anything special to my feed, but out of the bat it’s so much more depressing, rage inducing, and sensational. And the comments are way more…polarizing so to speak. There is more genuine people here than on Reddit, but every time I scroll here I stop because my heartbeat goes up. If Reddit is 50% bots doing ads and 40% ragebait, here all the ads are replaced by pure concentrated ragebait.

I don’t think so. Tech illiteracy is at an all time high and it affects everyone’s life a drastic amount. This isnt driving manual or writing cursive. I mean knowing what something is and using it can be 2 different things. Most people can save things to their computers or make a folder. They just have no reason to know the technical term or how the computer saves it behind the scenes, if you told them they’d likely remember.

File path is a specialized term? Ctrl+f is specialized ? This has existed for over 25 years. Its scary people dont know absolute basics.

It’d be something else if it wasnt a thing that encompasses every aspect of our lives 24/7 every single day of our lives. Dont you think people should be knowledgeable about it ? Ive always been of the mind I should be educated about important things like that and have been learning my entire life so I know things that matter.

Its also easier than its ever been. This isnt changing a flat tire or some physical thing people are more scared to learn. This is veeeery easy reading and videos to educate yourself on how a staple aspect of your life functions.

With federation, you shouldn’t need to consider that, browse, and participate with remote instances freely. Unless what you want to see is largely defederated, in which case, you should probably think about why it’s against the social contract of so many instances.

At a certain point, once everyone is there everyone else has to go there.

Balanced compared to most lemmy users, yes, though perhaps less than the average person. If you feel balanced on lemmy, then you are very much an extremist.

My comments seem negative because I only comment on controversial topics, and since I don’t parrot the common opinion around here, it gives them a negative tone. I never bother with the “I agree” comments like everyone loves so much, even when I do agree, because they do not incite discussion.

But some people come in with a ton of snark, condescension and rage, and then when it’s revealed that they don’t actually know what they’re talking about they double down, of course. I’ve started just blocking when I see the initial symptoms now.

Corporate control and toxic trolling are completely unrelated problems.

In fact, corporate control used to be one of the primary ways to REDUCE toxic trolling before all the tech platforms went mask off when they realized the political levers are now in the hands of those very trolls.

It’s a problem inherent in humanity. The only way to get rid of trolling, self-promotion, and toxicity is to get off the internet altogether.

Fediverse isn’t all that great though despite all the cope, scroll through all and you see that it’s 50% news slop about how US conservatives bad that’s designed to keep you scrolling, 35% porn, 5% leftoid memes and 10% for everything else, pretty much like reddit minus the copious amount of rightoids. The culture is also pretty much the same.

Engagement and upvote hunting also does play a role, else there wouldn’t be people who make posting their day job or (as of late) bots automatically scraping popular posts from reddit to post here.

Like sure it’s decentralized, but what good does it do when it’s almost the same in content as the bad platform it denounces?

On the fediverse you can hold real conversations with people in comments. That rarely happens on Reddit.

However as the fediverse grows, even as we are seeing in this thread, it becomes increasingly impossible.

have you tried different instances? piefed.social blocks nsfw/nsfl as well as ragebait political figures’ names by default.

at any rate most of the complaints people have with reddit aren’t about its content, they’re about its slimy ass leadership, powertripping mods, and AI infestation. fediverse isn’t immune to any of that but it hasn’t metastasized here at least.
