Jason Killinger is now suing the city of Reno, Nevada, after he was misidentified by AI and wrongfully arrested at the Peppermill casino.
Back in September 2023, long-haul truck driver Jason Killinger was detained and arrested by police in Nevada after he had been gambling at the Peppermill Casino. Killinger had been flagged by the venue’s AI facial recognition software, with its “100% match” claiming that he had been previously banned for sleeping at the premises.
Bodycam footage of the arrest showed Killinger protesting his innocence after he was misidentified as Michael Ellis. He eventually sued Reno Police Officer R. Jager and the casino, with court filings revealing he had spent 11 hours in custody, with four hours being spent in handcuffs.
The Peppermill Casino settled a claim with the truck driver, but a case against Officer Jager has been ongoing. Now, Killinger is also suing the city of Reno over it.

Any system that flags a person can’t be used as the sole case for arrest. This was “100%” sure it was him? We all have doppelgangers so a check to see who he was. Perhaps a request for ID or looking at his transaction information at the cash desk.
Good. Encourage your lawyer to go for the throat and FORCE future lawmakers to consider the cost of false positives
And all because some dude was banned for sleepling on the premises… fuck that. I blame the casino for not paying for enough security or personal to keep the premises clear of someone able to FALL ASLEEP enough to become an issue
The problem is (at least in the USA) that lawmakers are never personally held responsible for the crappy laws they pass. It’s a major contributor to how screwed up this country has become because they can force their personal ideology on everyone, no matter how misguided. This is something I strongly believe needs to be rectified to make real progress, but I’m not sure how that should happen.

Choose a side. One of them might kill you or lock you in a cage for something a person who never existed might have done.
Until the price of lawsuits about this eclipses the cost of AI use, they’re going to keep using it.
Any smart scumbag lawyer ought to be learning all the laws on AI misidentification and suing cities like crazy.
This farcical arrest would fit right into an episode of Reno 911.
Lived in reno for a while. Genuinely didn’t figure out it wasn’t reality until season two. In my defense the tvbi had at the time was garbage and the color was kinda fucked.
This whole thing reads like a skit and the fact that it was in Reno makes it feel like I didn’t just bite the onion but had the whole thing forced into my mouth

Did it misidentify him as the chief of police? I’m sorry, I know he’s a regular dude and I shouldn’t make fun of his appearance. But, he literally looks like the average cop.
When you fail to be a firefighter, you either decide to contribute to society and drive a big cool truck anyway and get to use the horn WHENEVER YOU WANT, or you become a cop.
Not that all truck drivers fail to be firefighters.
