I remember when there really weren’t images because those were too slow to load.
Images loading pixel by pixel, line by line, took ages. I don’t think I ever saw one full full-size photo for the first few years I was online.
Porn sites were a experience. I would load the first 1/6th of the image and be done. The rest was up to the imagination.
I was basically a crude LLM where I had to generate the rest of the image with minimal input.
I remember when we started getting images
I find it ironic and satisfying that the image link for your post is broken, and that’s how, like, 99% of the images actually work.
I’m in jerboa, and if I click on the link/broken image symbol the image loads. I haven’t checked web interface but I can later.
It’s a quirk of some sites. Or using mp4, idk.

Never had that, but I remember actually surfing the web of links between pages in the time before search engines.
All word of mouth back then, you would have a friend of a friend tell you about a website they visited. Then as soon as you got home you would pray you remembered the address as text-messaging was not a thing yet.

A similar but also opposite experience in many ways: I vividly remember me and a friend (teenage boys, mid 90s) waiting for a picture of a naked lady on some website, slowly loading line by line. Took forever. Finally it failed when it got to her chest, just above the boobs we wanted to see 😢

I mean they were some of the big ones, though digg, maybe newgrounds and even OG (no subreddits) Reddit was in the mix too
But you’re forgetting all the thousands of random phpBB/vBulletin/myBB/Invision/SMF forums run by passionate nerds with only around 20-30 other equally passionate nerds using them
I was hanging out on small phpbb forums and occasionally IRC. I didn’t use the internet in English back them though, which probably improved my experience quite a lot.
Something awful and YTMND I’ve heard about but I have no idea what they were, 4chan is a shit stain, and Ebaum I’ve never heard of before this comment. So clearly they were not that monopolizing.
Didn’t frequent any of them, I had several forums I frequented though
