If AI is what dooms us, and I am fairly sure that’s a nothingburger and climate change will get us way before AI can, but if AI is what gets us it won’t be a case of “we created god and god has turned against us” like everyone keeps talking about.
More like an infinite paperclip or Wargames scenario. Some idiot hyped up on the promises of salesmen will put a stupid ass algorithm in charge of something that it shouldn’t be in charge of, and the damage is done not by silicon malice but a bug on a machine that is making decisions with no human oversight

Every few months we get a new “OUR AI IS SENTIENT AND BROKE CONTAINMENT AND IS AN EXISTENTIAL THREAT” PR stunt from one of the big AI companies. Them saying it doesn’t make it true. Their glorified text completion engines are (according to researchers) a known evolutionary dead end that has reached a point of diminishing returns in terms of Computation/Training Data added to Actual Gain in Quality of Output – even IF you consider this kind of stochastic process adequate for “creating intelligence” (and it’s honestly debatable if it is).
They are trying to feed FOMO in investors to make more money. That’s all it has ever been. That is all it will be for the forseeable future.
It sucks because honestly? HONESTLY?
LLM Text Processing is kinda neat as a technology. It could have some interesting uses. Especially for making Machine Translation better. But they had to slap the “AI” label on it and sell that shit like there’s now a little man inside the computer. And if you don’t buy in right now you’re doomed because it’ll do IHNMAIMS things to you in the future. But also it’ll be the ideal slave meaning capitalists can finally replace literally every worker. It’s all fucking lies.
