Experiment this comic is referring to included the measurement of intensity of salivation if I remember correct. To achieve that, catheters were implanted to gather saliva in the container. You want me the find the schematics? Not sure if that is amusing material for local audience.

If I rememeber correctly, he also collected gastric juice in the same way, to see if signal also leads to stomach preparing for food. (Yes it does, and more so when food actually enters the mouth)
