I’ve wondered recently if “What is a band you’ve gotten into recently?” might be a better question than “What type of music do you like?”

That 70s band I’ve once heard something about, and I’ve been thinking of for quite a bit.
Band or artist is my go to for random small talk, I find a lot of times people will just say something vague like “a little bit of everything” if you ask for broad music tastes
I could break it down into genres I don’t like, but I think developing better music taste means not confining yourself to a specific genre.
Listening to too much 2010’s EDM that follows the same old formula made me realize variety is the spice of music.
“There’s only two kinds of music, good and bad”
Eclectic.
“Oh you should totally check out so n so, it’ll be right up your alley”
=> tends to be music that I don’t like.
It’s only the ones I like until I get tired of them and my tastes change completely.
Sometimes people ask me what sort of music I like.
The first few times I tried hard to list all the genres - then I realized that it’s all bullshit; now I always answer: “can’t narrow it down other than I like good music.”
If I had to choose between attending a local punk concert and a local classical concert though - I’d choose the punk concert, without hesitation.

Same, but I would choose that classical concert any day over a modern “Stadium Country” artist.
Same! It all depends. Don’t align yourself with genres.
There’s also the aspect that even a shitty punk band will probably be fun in concert.
Or, one might argue, “shitty punk band” is a pleonasm.
I’ve struggled to find some kind of logic or way to describe this to folks that doesn’t make me sound like a snob, but also avoids making me sound like a casual listener that listens to everything at the surface level.
My musical grounding is certainly a mix of post hardcore and prog metal, but over the years I have come to love music for all the forms it can take, and I’ve found songs or artists I truly love in a wide array of genres, eras and languages, to the exclusion of maybe modern country.

Well yeah, a band like Frodus was really easy for me to fall in love with, but I didn’t really get into a band like Slint until later in life.
It wood have been more accurate to call post hardcore and prog metal separate coordinate points for my musical landscape.
Kings X is practically part of my heritage, and I was literally raised on their Beatlesque proggy metal and raised kind of surrounded by prog and hair metal bands (not at the same time). Sunny Day Real Estate just hit me at the right time in my growing up that it became another major part of my musical identity. That’s what I mean by post hardcore, because the term emo means something meaningfully different than it did when I discovered them, but I called it emo forever until the ones with eyeliner started showing up.
I like a lot of different kinds of music, but I think I’ve broken it down to one main factor: how cool is the bass line?
Also, horn sections will always win me over.

I like the music which is good.
When I was working at record stores, this was, unironically, the correct answer. You can’t just like one genre and work at a record store; you have to be able to intelligently discuss blues, jazz, electronic, noise, punk, metal, pop, rock, and of good sampling of sub-genres as well in order to help customers not only find what they’re looking for but turn them on to other bands they might like. So when people asked “so, what kind of music do you like?” the answer was “oh, I like good music.”
What about the music which is bad?

It’s really weird for me to have a music type, like, do you really listen to such a narrow selection of song or only language you know of? To me if the vibe is right the vibe is right, i don’t care if i don’t understand it.

Most songs are fine in the background but generally boring. I wouldn’t say I “like” them.
This is called “eclectic” if the reason its hard to answer is because there’s lots of variety
In my case the right word would be “chaotic”. One or maybe two songs from many different artists, spanning all of the 20th and 21st century. Several different languages. Oh and also exactly one specific version of a song.
Devo once described themselves as the sound of things falling apart. That is pretty much my genre: falling apart, being ripped apart, or smashed to bits. If you can describe a song that way, I’ll probably like it.
