When the common person who is not very politically active looks into their voting options, they look to mainstream news. They listen to Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries because they are the Minority Leader and Caucus Leader. They listen to Ezra Klein’s podcast because Third Way is institutionally respected as representing the modern Democratic party. They read Neera Tanden’s tweets because the Center for American Progress is the main think tank of the Democrat party. The common person is told over and over that the Democrats are for neoliberal policies and they believe it because the Dem politicians in the highest positions of power and prominence are neoliberal.
Regular people are so hungry for progressive action that something as basic as a nyc mayor fixing potholes is seen as newsworthy. When they are faced with a barrage of neoliberal talking points from the leaders and consultants of the oppositional party, they get depressed. That is the leaders of the Democratic party flexing their power to punish their voter base for believing that better things are possible. That’s how you get stupid shit like “Democrats for Mike Rogers” or two Dems being the key votes to pass GOP bills last week. The leaders of the Democrat party are spending all their time trying to foment anger against their left flank instead of channeling the already existing anger against the Republican party.
