It was about 10 years in the making because it also involved opening an arcade as a way to make money. I had to find all those machines, learn to fix them, and get the arcade up and running as well.
Techies self host a Kubernetes cluster on their server rack at home. They set up completely isolated IoT devices with no access to the internet. They host their own Lemmy instance. Setup their own pirated Netflix using Jellyfin.
Someone who retreats to the forest because they are too scared of technology are most definitely not techies.
I do my own tech stuff so do some of my friends but it’s a very niche thing compared to the majority of people who describe themselves as “techies”. Many more are the types I described.
Being able to host my own shit is the reason I haven’t abandoned it altogether and I’m still on the verge of giving it all up and living in the woods. Things in tech are not improving for us.

4 years ago I quit my career in IT, moved out of the city, and now live in the woods. There are dozens of us.
I think about doing this all the time.

Gargling corporate nutsack every time they release a new smartphone and rushing to install the latest spyware in your home doesn’t make you a techie.
I know a game developer who works for Roblox who sends me Twitter links all the time and uses copilot. Blows my mind.

Some techies do that. Others really nerd out over smart watches. There’s no single type of techie.
It’s always interesting what you can learn about people based on what they immediately assume about others.
