I do my own tech stuff so do some of my friends but it’s a very niche thing compared to the majority of people who describe themselves as “techies”. Many more are the types I described.

Being able to host my own shit is the reason I haven’t abandoned it altogether and I’m still on the verge of giving it all up and living in the woods. Things in tech are not improving for us.
