The mod of that community, qrstuv, is known to have weird opinions and enforces them heavy handedly. The no abbreviations thing is something that’s come up before, don’t know what their issue with the terms propaganda and kangaroo court is.
What’s also fun is that there’s not even a written rule against abbreviations on any of their communities (or any rules really), so I guess you just kind of have to know the personal dislikes of the mod before daring to try to comment on any of their communities.
not even a written rule against abbreviations on any of their communities
See every writing style guide ever created.
So how do I know where bad writing style is a bannable offence and where it isn’t? Clearly on this comment of yours, it was fine to use abbreviations.
This is a discussion forum. If someone doesn’t know what “ICBM” or “SDF” is an abbreviation is it’s reasonable to say “Hey, I don’t know what that it is.” It’s NOT very reasonable to ban anyone and everyone who comments on news articles. If qrstuv wants their community to be a particular way, they’ll get closer to that by communicating with users in threads about what the expectations are and what examples of good comments are. Removing comments with minimal explanation doesn’t help anyone understand what a good comment is or how they should be engaging in that community. The result has basically been what you see: !news@lemmy.sdf.org is a single user community without much engagement. Anyone who stumbles in and doesn’t know what they are in for is probable to get a removal
Did i wander into EngLit 101? No? I’m on the internet?
Stfu.
Mods, ban them for not including a reference page in their comment.
Yeah, qrstuv is being a PTB here. They basically looked for reasons to ban everyone in a thread.
qrstuv bans people for using abbreviations, but uses abbreviations themself. I will never understand the instance culture of sdf
I don’t think that single troll is representative of the broader culture on SDF, although SDF’s admins are notably absent in terms of moderating the instance at an admin level, which is how trolls there tend to stick around for a long time, only ever getting banned from communities.
Whenever I’ve pushed back about qrstuv I’ve been informed by sdfers that it is part of the instance culture, but perhaps they’re in on the troll as well
They might be. I suspect I know who it was who told you that, unfortunately the lack of admin involvement means some pretty nasty people flourish there, including people who on any other instance would’ve been completely banned. I remember there was a neonazi who joined a while back and it was like pulling teeth to get the SDF admin to actually ban that piece of shit from the instance.
Weird place either way, but nice to have some insight
It’s a troll instance. You dodged a bullet.
You and what army?
I rest my case.
I file an appeal.
The users of that community are known to have weird opinions that force the mod to take seemingly heavy handed action to prevent it. The no abbreviations thing is something that’s come up before, and yet these trolls continue to break the rules relentlessly and then come here to complain about it just to stir up drama. As you can see in this very thread, there’s a witch hunt brewing against qrstuv
Edit: YDI
SDF has a unique instance culture, that’s for sure.
No that’s purely on the mod
Source?
The history of the mod actions in this very comm
I meant a reliable source
I’d like a reliable source that’s what the users want
Qrstuv DMed me and said so himself so I have a primary source while all you have is the fake news modlog screenshots
Doubt. And do you think people are faking screenshots to make it seem like they want posts or comments removed for such random or terrible reasons?
Or don’t know that modlogs are public and federated to other instances?
Looks like justice to me.

Hmm I wonder what Not Dr. Wesker would say?
Fuck that guy tbh.
