I used to volunteer at a pound and there was one fat orange cat named ruffles. He was not nearly as fat as this guy, just a bit chonky. He was SUPER sweet and one day I came back and he was gone

Wow, I’ve seen posts about the here and there. I’ve got such mixed feelings about it. I mean it’s interesting and good to spread awareness. But it feels wrong to make entertainment from sick people.

I’m not sure why you’d need a fat camp for a pet. Just feed them slightly less and they lose weight
If you have multiple pets that can be harder than it sounds. And if you don’t have a ton of money the good solutions (e.g. locked feeders with RFID tags) can be pricy.
A pet doesn’t get fat on its own. It’s about separating the pet from the abusive owner.
Some times the owner has mental health issues.
Abusers having psychiatric problems does not absolve them of their abusive behaviour.

When you tell people obvious things, sometimes it comes across as condescending. From the downvotes it’s clear I’m not the only person to see it that way
It doesn’t completely work that way, just like for humans. Sometimes feeding pets less is just subjecting them to pretty severe discomfort and hunger, while their metabolism is deciding that food is scarce so they better hoard every calorie they can spare. I know it’s significantly urgent to help them lose weight because of the health impacts, but IDK that it is super simple once you’ve decided to try to make it happen.
