In the title. Have you started losing more and more of your (past) social circles over your political stances?
I’ve lost my entire social circle simply for being disabled.
Oof, I get that a ton, and every time I try to look for new friends, it seems like this alone cuts off 99.999% of the people for some reason.
I’ve come to the conclusion that most human relationships are transactional and when you’re disabled you don’t offer enough for other people to want to transact with you.
My mom reacted to the sounds (not vocal) that are the sounds of hellish pain to me as being annoying to her and this is where I lost faith a bit in having any connections where I could ever be me.
Yes. I have lost a lot of people because of this, although it’s not because they reject me or anything, (most people don’t have enough of an interest in politics in the first place to cut people off over it), but because I personally can’t stand listening to their ignorance and willful detachment, and I find myself slowly drifting from these people over time.
That kind of ignorance is really frustrating. People talking like a defeatist and not doing anything to try and learn how to become optimistic or create a better world.
If anything my poltical stances have granted me MORE friends. Before I was only friends with a small circle of people directly related to the area around me and I would lose them as they moved away or became interested in other things. However I have gained a ton of friends just for being unapologetically communist. Everything from other ML’s, Professors, and people who arent interested in politics.
My agitation comes from a place of understanding so I don’t really ever end up with arguments with people and always take the position of I could be wrong. But I’m sure I’ve also gotten very lucky in the people I meet. Obviously there are people who are too aggressively reactionary to really get close with and it might be that by being outspoken I’ve attracted people who are more accepting to the ideas.
I haven’t lost anyone I wasn’t already on the verge of cutting off, but it has made me lose a lot of respect for some acquaintances who refuse to put the intellectual work into their political stances. An uncle wants Harris to run again, and didn’t understand when I asked “Why, so we can watch her lose again?”, an aunt thinks that Gavin Newsom would be a good candidate, an old grandboss is a libertarian who told me I was “one of the good parts of [my] generation” for not liking Bernie Sanders until I told him it’s because he’s too far right-wing. My brother was a political science major, and is convinced that he’s “far-left” because he “understands how close the US is to fascism”.
Alienating the ones with the most sympathetic ears isn’t going to help them develop further. Their odds are better if I don’t wall-of-text them, and lead them gradually.
I am not in USA and a lot of the election stuff is alien to me as I don’t know much at all. Unfortunately I have been disowned and the only people I keep some contact with are not willing to contact more often on their own volition. Should’ve expected this in a country of 2% trans approval rate but it was a mater of life / death and it just doesn’t seem to get better, I don’t know
Close family? Not really
Online friends? Some, yeah
Ever since then, I’ve kept my opinions to myself rather than sharing them publicly. I know speaking up could expose me to unnecessary surveillance and put my safety at risk
more like i tolerate nazis less and less.
For me it’s okay to have different opinions, like for example if chocolate or strawberry ice cream is better. But I don’t wanna discuss about who deserves basic human rights.
So I “lost” some of those, if you wanna say so.
This is where I am.
“lost” implies that I wish I had them back. (This is partly a joke.) I have cut off some people because of their political views. I barely talk to my parents because they are prime examples of being willing labor aristocracy despite having plenty of reason to become class conscious.
“Don’t expose me to sars-cov-2” costed me everyone
Honestly no, i have either convinced my friends of communism or agreed to disagree. Not that I have stopped voicing my opinions around the latter group
Every day I am tolerating my family less and less, but I am currently financially dependent on them. They radiate more and more Hitler particles with each passing hour, and I can’t stand it. My friend group is getting more tense for me because one of my friends who I am trying to distance from has ‘taken the blackpill’ after a bad breakup with another member of the friend group and that shit is poison. I have yet to put a name on my political opinions to them, but I voice my political stances on major issues pretty brazenly.
I feel like there will come a time where something has to give, and I am gonna lose a lot of people over my politics, for better or for worse, and I won’t miss them. From here on out I’m gonna try to be more open about them to put up a warning sign early to people I may befriend in the future. “Nazis beware!”
