New York City reached a settlement with the gig delivery platform DoorDash that will bring $115 million to the city’s drivers and create a new monitoring system of the company’s pay practices.
The deal resolves allegations that DoorDash underpaid more than 260,000 drivers. The city said it was the largest labor enforcement action in its history.
“When a worker earns a wage, they deserve to be paid that wage — not tomorrow, not after a lawsuit, but on time and in full,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement Tuesday.
The settlement also includes more than $16 million in civil penalties.

Absolute bullshit. Unintentional pay “mistakes” would also include a statistically huge percentage of overpayments, but when has that ever happened? What’s more there’s no question a significant portion of their drivers complained about the wage theft but Doordash ignored their “mistaken” underpayments until the city got involved.
This is systemic, deliberate wage theft that would have continued in NYC without Mamdani.

While it is true that companies do fuck up royally on an entirely too regular basis, it is rare to have a mayor step in on the side of the municipal working class and take their side in a dispute. Far more often, you need a crew of privately retained lawyers working the class to shake it out in your favor.

I mean in new york thats very little but its a step. You cant fix everything all at once but considering everything this is a huge step. If a company only works by exploiting people and breaking the law, that company should not exist, it’s as simple as that. People will find other, healthier ways to get food into their homes.
Then they can leave and free up whatever resources they were using up, for someone who can run a business that doesn’t exploit their workers. I don’t know why we are supposed to fear a wealth extraction system if it leaves and stops extracting our wealth.

dd and uber lyft inflate prices by 20% all day everyday and also their commission cut of the fare is about 30-40%+ extremely high for a platform actually. 10% or less and time goes on should be the default not more and more take from the services while charging higher and higher prices.
131m is better than nothing but is a ongoing issue its not a mistake or a screw up it is deliberate criminal theft. shut the companies down and ban them completely there are replacements everywhere its not a loss. the workers would work on any platform introduced anyway as these apps provide almost no value.
If I were Mandani I would let all other companies low it is time to check their accounts and pay back anything missing voluntarily, then pass stupid large fines for any underpayment of workers
