In the graph above I’ve arranged the 28 Threadiverse instances with at least 200 monthly active users (MAU)—orange instances running Lemmy, green Piefed, and red Mbin—on the basis of which instances they defederate.

Each instance has its MAU count listed below it, sourced from the latest MAU figures at Fediverse Observer, with adjustments made to the totals for Piefed (due to undercounting by outdated instances, as noted here; I used @Vicinus@piefed.zip’s suggested estimate of 7,200 Piefed users) and Mbin (due to tardigram.com having a duplicate listing).

After adjustments, there are an estimated 43,287 monthly active Threadiverse users (35,184+7,200+903), of whom 87.84% are on the 28 largest instances. The percentages listed alongside the MAU figures correspond to each instance’s share of the total MAU count.

Defederation data was sourced from Federation Checker. The tool doesn’t support Mbin instances, so I left fedia.io in its own category. If any defederations are missing, feel free to let me know. Ideally such a chart should also include community blocks to better illustrate which instances block what, but that data doesn’t appear to be as easily searchable.

I also noticed cases of some instances being listed as being defederated by another instance, despite not appearing on the defederation list for that instance (i.e. reddthat.com and lemmygrad.ml are listed as being mutually blocked, despite neither having the other on their block lists). In testing that federation, I noticed that !wholesome@reddthat.com did not federate to Lemmygrad while !memes@reddthat.com did, so clarification on that matter would be helpful.

While I’ll update my generalized chart as needed to correct errors, perhaps at some point an automated federation mapping tool similar to the one feddit.de formerly hosted could be developed to more completely illustrate instance federation.

    Neat graph!

    If I understand correctly, the source instance is the start of the arrow, and the instance it has defederated from is at the destination. It’s interesting that there are so few bidirectional defederations among the large instances.

      As someone from sh.itjust.works informed me, their defederation of Beehaw was made at Beehaw’s request to ensure ‘complete’ defederation, so I won’t list it in my revision.

      Most bi-directional defederations are by Hexbear, as 25 of the 29 instances that defederate them are not on their allowlist. The remainder (among the top 60 instances) are lemmy.world ⇔ forum.guncadindex.com, quokk.au ⇔ awful.systems, quokk.au ⇔ feddit.org, startrek.website ⇔ anarchist.nexus, and fedinsfw.app ⇔ lemmygrad.ml.

      Exclusive to Piefed is the ‘silenced’ status (semi-defederation, in practical terms), where posts from silenced instances do not appear in the ‘popular’ or ‘all’ feeds, though users may view posts in their subscription feed if subscribed to specific communities from that instance. Piefed.social and anarchist.nexus are mutually silenced.

      That’s correct. The linked post has a description by the author. The % are of MAU represented by the sum of instances doing the blocking.

      So about 2/3 of users are defederated from hexbear and lemmygrad.

        In the process of expanding the chart to include the 60 instances with at least 50 MAU at the moment (significantly more complex than placing instances in essentially five boxes), though the expanded defederation rates (now accounting for 96.6% of users) for Lemmygrad and Hexbear are 73.18% and 70.61%, respectively. Both are defederated from 35 of the top 60 instances.

        Lemmynsfw.com technically has the highest defederation rate (90.6%), as like Hexbear it is in allowlist mode, only federating with fedinsfw.app. Next on the list are (unsurprisingly) the other two instances defederated from lemmy.world, forum.guncadindex.com (49.32%) and Beehaw (40.76%).

            It still exists, it’s just in archive mode with no new posts allowed. If including it complicates the graph too much then I won’t (especially since its MAU count is dropping month-after-month as users switch to fedinsfw), though I thought it might be a helpful indicator of the defederation priorities of certain instances.
