Have you done a major version upgrade ever? That’s usually the only downside to stable distros, though Mint tends to manage them better than Debian and probably a few others I could think of.
Pacman is the PACkage MANager (lol get it?) for Arch based distros. It would be apt for you. Or, you know, just Mint’s graphical app store + update manager which I have never seen a reason to not use.
I use Mint. I don’t do anything to it. I don’t remember when I installed it, it’s been so long. It just keeps updating.
