Somebody is managing him, and they know exactly what they’re using him for. I wouldn’t count on the regime falling apart. I fear that they’re smart enough to recruit a new, charismatic face when the time comes.
We need a new modality besides first/second/third world country. Developed/undeveloped doesn’t even really work since most all countries (except the US who are backsliding) have made it through the demographic transition. Countries with stable social nets?

Dont need a charismatic face when you declare any election you lose invalid and eventually stack the courts so much you can win any case.
