Not sure if it’s just early instance issues, but posts from other instances don’t seem to be loading comments. Number of comments for active communities seem very low.

I think you’re correct that this is federation delay. When I’ve deployed Lemmy before, it’s taken a while for federation to stabilize (symptoms are community subscriptions showing “pending” and the lack of comments you described). I think this is due to limits on the amount of data exchanged at once. I’ll keep an eye on it over the next couple of days.

At this point federation traffic seems to have quieted down. I think what we’re dealing with now is just the expected behavior of Lemmy/ActivityPub in general: there’s not really any such thing as backfill. Old posts will appear as they’re commented on or users follow links to them, and (some) comments will populate as posts are viewed.

This has been raised as an issue but it’s never really gone anywhere: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3448

Grateful for forbearance of 2 n00b questions

1 - I’m trying to access crafts/handmade [sub-lemmies] on lemm.ee - I end up just getting errors. Is there a recommended way to request that a server be considered for federation (I suspect that’s the reason I can’t load those posts in search results)

2 - if I wanted to organize a sub on a topic I have modded on other platforms, such as “fiber processing” or “handspinning” or “dyeing” … topics that currently have no equivalent on any lemmy servers we’re federated with… what’s the best way to a) find out what setup/admin tasks are recommended/required b) after reading, then where/how to submit a request to start that sub?

Thanks for your help and time!

      1. Last I knew about lemme.ee is that it was shutting down. Heading out to lemm.ee itself, it redirects to the join Lemmy page, so I believe it’s no longer an active instance.

      2. I haven’t tried it myself, but in the main menu for Lemmy.4d2.org , “Create Community” (community being the Lemmy equivalent of a subreddit) . I’m not sure if it’s locked down at all on the admin side, but if something requires approval and I can’t provide it, then I’m sure @sarah@lemmy.4d2.org can also assist and get things squared away

Which instance are you having issues with? I’ve had comments for a bit, but maybe it’s a federation issue? @sarah@lemmy.4d2.org may be able to provide more info with details about what’s not showing up.

I can’t see the comments from the lemmy.world communities. I tried checking the Android@lemdro.id community, and it works, but the corresponding community on lemmy.world doesn’t display any comments.

I do see that community as existing, but Lemmy will only federate posts and comments if at least one local user is subscribed to a community - and no one was subscribed to !android@lemmy.world. I subscribed to it and we started receiving newer posts and comments.

Interesting. So I will have to subscribe to the communities individually before I can access their content

If no one else on the server is subscribed, that’s right - Lemmy servers only start fetching data for a community once at least one user is subscribed to it. It’s similar to how Mastodon and Matrix work too, but it’s confusing in comparison to something like Reddit.

I think I figured this one out! I logged into my old lemmy.world account and there isn’t a !android@lemmy.world community! Looks like the posts lemmy.4d2.org has for lemmy.world’s android are from two months ago, and no new comments were added since those posts were first seen.
