Not sure if it’s just early instance issues, but posts from other instances don’t seem to be loading comments. Number of comments for active communities seem very low.

Which instance are you having issues with? I’ve had comments for a bit, but maybe it’s a federation issue? @sarah@lemmy.4d2.org may be able to provide more info with details about what’s not showing up.

I can’t see the comments from the lemmy.world communities. I tried checking the Android@lemdro.id community, and it works, but the corresponding community on lemmy.world doesn’t display any comments.

I think I figured this one out! I logged into my old lemmy.world account and there isn’t a !android@lemmy.world community! Looks like the posts lemmy.4d2.org has for lemmy.world’s android are from two months ago, and no new comments were added since those posts were first seen.

I do see that community as existing, but Lemmy will only federate posts and comments if at least one local user is subscribed to a community - and no one was subscribed to !android@lemmy.world. I subscribed to it and we started receiving newer posts and comments.

Interesting. So I will have to subscribe to the communities individually before I can access their content

If no one else on the server is subscribed, that’s right - Lemmy servers only start fetching data for a community once at least one user is subscribed to it. It’s similar to how Mastodon and Matrix work too, but it’s confusing in comparison to something like Reddit.
