There would be more control. Also an international military isn’t as attractive to a fascist with an ultra nationalist mindset as a national military, and, if you are required to speak multiple languages, this will filter out the absolute idiots flocking to the Bundeswehr.

There is an example of more control:

Several years ago, a Bundeswehr officer got caught preparing a false flag terror attack posing as a Syrian refugee in order to enrage the German public against foreigners. In the subsequent investigation it came to light that he had actually been reported due to his racist world views and recommended for dismissal by a French superior while taking part in an exchange programme with the French military. The Bundeswehr chose not to act on this recommendation, and he only got caught much later when trying to smuggle a gun though airport security.

Trying to have EU step in and do things better is a fantasy in this case.

          • Outsourcing German army to a trade union that’s under significant German influence doesn’t sound like that much of a change,
          • EU is even less accountable to people than local governments,
          • EU is a trade union and those don’t have armies. Changing that will require restructuring EU and that won’t happen because of vetos.

I’m sure there’s some appetite for this regardless. Doing it over people’s heads will erode trust in EU even more.

The EU always has been a political project, I don’t know who keeps seeding the misinformation about it being nothing but a trade alliance. The original motivation, even behind the earliest precursors of the EU, was to prevent something like WW2 from ever happening again in Europe. The quickest and easiest method of reaching that goal was mutually assured bankruptcy in case of countries attacking one another.

It is a trade union based on what it’s competencies are currently. It provides a common market, common law, regulations and is authorised to make trade deals on behalf of member states. Most of the other things it does is usually an overreach.

It’d be nice if it was a federation but it’s not until all member states agree and agree on how to do that. Trying to make it a federation by force or by skipping required steps will just sow more discontent.
