The EU always has been a political project, I don’t know who keeps seeding the misinformation about it being nothing but a trade alliance. The original motivation, even behind the earliest precursors of the EU, was to prevent something like WW2 from ever happening again in Europe. The quickest and easiest method of reaching that goal was mutually assured bankruptcy in case of countries attacking one another.
It is a trade union based on what it’s competencies are currently. It provides a common market, common law, regulations and is authorised to make trade deals on behalf of member states. Most of the other things it does is usually an overreach.
It’d be nice if it was a federation but it’s not until all member states agree and agree on how to do that. Trying to make it a federation by force or by skipping required steps will just sow more discontent.
