Mega Man will be making his grand return in 2027 with Mega Man: Dual Override, a 2D side-scroller that harkens back to the blue bomber’s origins while carving a new path forward.

Interesting. The first half of this video is a hallway. Nothing in this teaser got me excited. The little game play we got looks like all the previous Megaman games. With so many indie people putting a spin on the originals, I really hope the next trailer has real content.

I almost downvoted the video. I felt like even my nostalgia and love for the series was waning as the announcement dragged on.

If I’d watched it live, I would have noticed the years of original release as the corridor went on and I bet my hype levels would have going in the right direction. But since I knew what it was, all I could do was watch and frown.

I bought nine and ten on day one release for WiiWare, but I’m not sure this is for me anymore (but I am happy for one of my new favorite YouTubers FlamingMercury5; she’s gotta be smiling about this news).

    Sorry to be negative today!

What would you have wanted? I didn’t play 9 or 10, but they look like more of the same.

I’m not sure I like this one either. The last one I enjoyed was 2. I played the others up to the SNES versions, which I did not enjoy.

I don’t know what I would have wanted from a new game. What I really like is the clever remixes of the old games that show up on my feed from time to time like Mega Man Maker.

Nine and ten were more of the same. But the stages were well-planned and the experience of trying to find the weaknesses without a strategy guide was great.

Maybe what I’d want would be a game that connects the worlds of Mega Man to the world of Mega Man X. But I would only care about the lore, not the game.

I guess what would really excite me would be a clever time travel story line that has you visiting reimagined old stages facing off against all the bots in series history. I’d love new weakness circles that take advantage of these multiple games’ worth of robot masters. I’d like boss chase fights, two bosses at a time fights, multiplayer story mode, a metroidvania-style world…

I realize in my ranting that what I’m looking for isn’t near what they are making. My plan is to be happy for those that are happy.

Games like Mega Man and Final Fantasy, which had limited storytelling and even more limited visuals, spoke more to me then where I had to fill in the blanks with my imagination. As they evolved with more involved plots and graphical styles that were distinct (realism, anime) I became disinterested in them. A lot of it had to do with being told “this is what Mega Man/Final Fantasy is,” with my gut disagreeing entirely.

I want “old school” visuals with modern gameplay. Shovel Knight is an example. Loved that game. If they made a Mega Man that looked like 1 or 2, but had more to do (a Metroidvania would be one idea) that would be where I’d like to see things go. Part of the puzzle was trial and error with boss powers. You’d enter a level and learn fairly quickly whether that level was appropriate for the power you’d obtained. What about using those powers to traverse/manipulate the environment? Unlock hidden areas, not just as a tool to defeat the next boss.

‘New path’ makes me think it’s a reboot and that’s why it’s not called Mega Man 12.

Yeah, an official Capcom press release called it the 12th entry in the main series, so they’re not shying away from that. But it’s interesting to see. The graphics still look pretty similar to the style of Mega Man 11.

That sounds like a great idea actually.

Zelda’s on like it’s 7th reboot or something.

I mean there are some games that are direct sequels, but you’re right in that they’re mostly blocked into their own continuities.

They did try to make the case that all Zelda games were part of a shared timeline (with divergences) in the Hyrule Historia, but it was just a tacked-on structure to satisfy the fans. And they basically threw that away with Breath of the Wild.

Oh yeah, I meant in general, not counting the direct sequels.

I agree about the timeline, this is just to make fans happy. They make whatever game they want to make and then someone later decides where to put it in this chart.

But even if you do believe in the timeline, there are still no reboots, since it’s all in a shared timeline (excluding BoTW and TotK, but we can call them a spin-off for now) 😀

They definitely do. The old skeleton in Twilight Princess who teaches you sword fighting is the previous Link. Most games are set in either the branch where you win or the branch where you lose in Ocarina of Time.

            Interesting.

My comment was more of a lighthearted quip then a deeply though argument, but while we are going down that rabbit hole, if that skeleton was previous link, then it means it’s a continuation, not a reboot.

Well that looks really nice. Interested to hear more info. The little armor thing at the end, the title, and the ‘new path forward’ tidbit make it sound like it’ll have some interesting twist.

      DLN-001, that’s Mega Man’s serial number.

      DR. Light, robot 1

Protoman is DLN000, and based on the whistle at the end, it’ll be around, too.

I feel like two years is standard to wait on anything these days. All my favorite shows take two or three years between seasons. It’s excruciating.

Someone who hasn’t played any Mega Man game (except one a long time ago which felt very difficult), any suggestions on where to start? And also tips for a beginner.

MEGA Man 2 is the go to and read strategy guides for the boss order.

The games are hard and unfair, but mastering them is where the fun is.

Also Make sure you have the option for a turbo button.

If you’ve never played, start with 11. If you fall in love theres a lot to go into. I love 3 because it introduces the slide that is missing on 2. But it’s also the first one I played. 11 captures the feeling of the original series well, while being modern and polished

That can be a good option, I recall playing a bit of it, but it has been too long, so can give this a try, and it’s a pretty modern game, so if I don’t even enjoy (or finish) that, no point in going back and playing harder games.

The 8bit games were known for being difficult and sometimes frustrating. The Legacy Collection on Switch has a rewind feature to help with the hard parts.

My favourite Mega Man ever is the first Mega Man X, originally for the Super Nintendo. It built up on everything that came in the 8bit era and is easier to handle/more forgiving. I’d recommend that one as a start, I love it and still play it every now and then. The first stage is a master piece in design, teaching you how to play as you go.

So, Mega Man Legacy Collection an Mega Man X Legacy Collection both are on sale right now, which one should I get? Mega Man 11 is also on sale so can get that too.
