Summary

Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins announced their opposition to Pete Hegseth’s nomination for U.S. defense secretary, citing concerns over his lack of experience, past behavior, and comments on women in combat roles.

Hegseth, a Fox News host and army veteran, faces allegations of sexual assault, excessive drinking, and financial mismanagement, which were raised during his Senate hearing.

With Republicans holding a slim majority, Hegseth can only afford three defections.

A final Senate vote is scheduled for Friday night, with confirmation uncertain.

Alternate headline: “Key Republican senators will once again pretend to be moderates when their votes are guaranteed to be meaningless”

If a third Republican senator actually steps forward to tank Hegseth’s nomination, I’ll eat my hat.

Oh cool, they get to play the moderates when he gets confirmed 51-49. I forgot all about the distraction we get from the two of them, just wish ol’ Mittens was still around to espouse the need for decorum as the furnaces are lit.

What are you doing, Susan??? You’re supposed to say something about him learning his lesson just before he proves that he didn’t learn his lesson

“Given Republicans’ 53-47 advantage in the Senate, Hegseth can only afford to lose three of their votes.”

Marco Rubio, AFAIK, hasn’t been replaced yet, so it’s 52-47 with 2 voting “No”. 50-47. One more and he’s not comfirmed.
