Hell, isn’t that the main reason they dropped the Aero Glass theme, to save battery life?
I highly doubt that about Aero. The compositor has to draw the screen anyway, the pixel shader for the refraction should cost nothing on modern GPUs. Do you have a source were they claimed that?
Edit: TL;DR - Both battery life and performance issues, particularly on their Surface RT platform they were hoping would be the next big thing.
