My personal problem with this is that we’re not talking about ANY country but specifically about the current US admin which has recently, shitting on all international rules, declared itself to be above international law and kidnapped an foreign leader (yes, he was dictator, but for international laws to be valuable they must treat EVERYONE equal… not only the ones deemed worthy by the biggest bully in the yard). Since this isn’t the first wave of protests but the first one to, apparently, get inhumanely bloody in this magnitude one obvious key factor differing this one from the previous ones is the openly hostile and antidemocratic US admin taking power one year ago.

Taking this factors into consideration it seems highly questionable weather these protests will lead to an overall better situation for the Iranian people… and this outcome would be the only one justifying the blood shed.

People don’t want to repeat their mistake of blindly cheering revolutions just for them to turn into even worse dictatorships afterwards… like it happened in many countries after Arabian spring. Hence the skepticism and caution in my eyes is more a sign of an ability to learn from past mistakes… especially since this time a foreign nation isn’t ,secondarily involved" but repeatedly made actual threats to destabilize the nation in question and is actively threatening with war, not for the people but to fill its own pockets and demonstrate its power.

There are various reasons China made it before not instead of others. Industrialization is taking up speed on Africa for example even if we like to ignore it.

However China isn’t flawless and one aspect of the price it paiys is a selfmade demographic problem: The incedrible chatch up speed wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the one-child-poöicy which, coupled with immensly hard work by the Chinese population and heavy environmental destruction, allowed for China to become an economic giant within decades. This policy however will backfire in the near future. It’s not all black and white but mostly grey… as always.

Yes and no… there used to be something like patent protection and copyrights which, in my eyes, promoted innovation since you were ensured to be able to make use of your ideas.

I think the US way beyond the point of peaceful protest. You have 40% (which also happen to be the better armed portion of the population) approving of a dictator turning your democracy into a dictatorship.

Trump (and his much more dangerous puppet masters) have made it evidently clear that they ignore both congress and judges at their will. Congress and senate at the same time are filled with representatives presenting the elites profiting from Trumps coup, not you.

Short of system change I don’t think you’ll get out of this.

It will level out globally in the long run because it’s easier to catch up with others than to lead by innovation. What will prevent the world from copying Chinese innovations after China itself did so for decades?

There’s another important factor complicating things for Chinese companies:

China has copied every peace of technology they could get a hold of in the last 40 years (a smart move to close the gap between the leading nations and yourself in every sector). However, as Chinese industries now have reached the current state of the art and plan on overtaking the competition by making new innovations this leads to a problem: You hardly can dominate global markets while gatekeeping your technology. So China is now faced with the ironic problem of either protecting its innovations or exporting them to the world because it’s not likely that any Western authority will give two shits about protecting Chinese intellectual property and/or patents when China itself didn’t care for the last decades.

Jep, I think the lack of specialized communities is definetly a problem. However I think this is, in the last resort, mostly up to us as users. If we don’t create content for topics we find interesting… who else could?

But I also get that possible reddit refugees who are used to lurk on content instead of creating it (I don’t exclude myself here) will find the plattform(s) to empty to be satisfied.

I don’t quite get it:

Lemmy has started in 2019 with 0 users and 0 instances. In 2023 there were still less than 100 instances… now the platform has oviously jumped to a few thousand instances and about 100 k users. To me this is the opposite of a ghostland. If we consider that bigTech will mostly screw over their customers bowing to Trump I don’t really get all the negativity around here.

I’ve joined two days ago and you know what? I’m actually willing to contribute by posting instead of lurking at reddit because if I create content it’s not for somme multi million dollar corp to fill their pockets with revenue but for this community to thrive…

I guess the problem are the users (you and me) or better or use of plattforms itself.

On reddit I tended to be lurker. And if most of us are the few which actually POST content are the those with strong (mostly political) views who are willing to commit to their cause by flooding the zone with political fights.

Coclusion: If we want a cozy lemmy we need to join/start non-political, subject specific communities and actually CONTRIBUTE something instead of just consuming. Otherwise this cluster of plattforms will end up like all the other due to the same reasons.

What you’re describing isn’t Lemmy specific I think, same happens of you browse the news feed of reddit (and most probably also other social media).

What helps me is subscribing to non-political topics and scrolling through your own feed of non-political stuff instead of the main site… gardening, hobbies, memes… that’s what these sites once ought to be made for. Not 24/7 political bombardment.

Unfortunately I (non-american) hear close to nothing from the Dems since ~ 12 months. Given their inactivity and assumed unwillignes to figth against the rise of Trumps dictatorship I have little hopes that the midterms change anything… also given that Trump seems to ignore the parliaments whenevwr he likes.

While this is true most oil is used as fuel not as material isn’t it? Given that the world opts out of oil as fuel there would still be a massive oversupply for the remaining use. Prices would probably come down a lot making exploration of new fields unprofitable in the near future or am I missing something?

The feudalists behind Trump made the mistake to give the population a chance to bring him down once… they won’t repeat it. Also, if I remember correctly the SCOTUS granted the POTUS immunity for any action commited during his presidency. So whether Trump an others will be helf accountable his highly questionable to me… even if he loses the election in 3 years.
