Earning a living implies that you’re not using passive income to mooch off people. It’s contrasted to land lords and nobility who were simply entitled to money.

News@lemmy.world•Americans are holding onto devices longer than ever and it’s costing the economy
34·2 days agoIt doesn’t cost the economy at all; great efficiency frees up resources for other purposes. The only downside is to the companies that make the devices and rely on planned obsolescence for profitability. The stock market and “the economy” are NOT synonyms.

politics @lemmy.world•Dems eye new way to shake up 2028 primaries: ranked-choice voting
321·2 days agoIt’ll be an uphill battle since Ranked Choice Voting would weaken the power of both Democrats & Republicans and party leadership knows it but I also support it strongly for just that reason.

politics @lemmy.world•We elected an imbecile — and his latest move could kill us all
1·2 days agoCan’t win them all. I ascribe to the saying “if voting didn’t work, they wouldn’t try so hard to stop people from doing it” though I am realistic about it’s limitations. Voting each year is the bare minimum people can do to change conditions.

35·3 days ago“Now, there’s one thing you might have noticed I don’t complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don’t fall out of the sky. They don’t pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It’s what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish, ignorant leaders." -George Carlin

I read that if it wasn’t for the US dumping it’s strategic helium supply, the price of a party balloon would be $50. Yes, Helium 3 gets attention for Fusion research but regular Helium is used heavily in imaging equipment like MRI’s. The Large Hadron Collider needs 130 metric tons of the stuff.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•California to become first state to sell cheap insulin through state-backed program
1·1 month agoSometimes that may be true but neurologically, empathy is often driven by experience and most people have a relative with diabetes and many people have a diabetic relative who struggles financially with it. This would be hard to demonize.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•California to become first state to sell cheap insulin through state-backed program
1·1 month ago“I deserve-it/actually-need-it not like those other free loaders” is a very real attitude that many Americans have.
Netanyahu is still unpopular and faces prosecution if the war ever stops. Israelis just support Genocide because it’s gotten more and more religiously conservative over time and their religion states:
Deuteronomy 20: 16 However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. 17 Completely destroy[a] them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the Lord your God has commanded you. 18 Otherwise, they will teach you to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their gods, and you will sin against the Lord your God.
