What games would you pick that aren’t really a part of the horror genre, but maybe have horror vibes, or fall vibes, or something else that makes them really suited for fall?
Bloodborne’s pretty horror-oriented, no?
But on the question, almost every metroidvania I’ve seen, including the games that give name to the genre, have some degree of horror in them.
I wouldn’t remove posts if someone wanted to discuss it here but it’s not officially of the horror genre, if that’s what you mean
That’s a good pick!
Ah, didn’t know it wasn’t officially one. "<.<
Also while overall a more light-hearted, Final Fantasy X-2 has a certain part, iirc in a story dungeon from chapter 3, that plays in a loop in a way that starts causing anxiety.
…and I think that’s the name of the track, Anxiety.
Also reminds me of FFXII. It has a few multiple cases of getting the player unprepared to the point of a scare (though no jumpscare thankfully).
The environmental storytelling of the dungeon leading to a certain superboss hints to what would make a great horror sidestory. Weather changing lowers visibility, makes the playing area music more somber, and brings some nasty surprises in the form of enemies. Some monsters’ lores and item descriptions also give a concerning feeling. All entrances to the Zertinan Caverns (optional region) are rather ominous. Two mandatory regions in the latter third of the game and an optional dungeon you get access to afterwards all give a mysterious but oppressive atmosphere. So do two regions you can get to relatively early in the game and that you got the best weapon in the game from originally, except there you also have the worry of getting mauled by whatever hides in the Mist, an excessive amount of invisible explosive glyphs (which I think could have story reasons to be), and with no saves at all in the region.
And there’s Persona 3 too. “I sense Death!”. Thanks intel lady, I needed the added detail for the trauma. 😬
Plus in the floors you’re more likely meeting an early game over, they have their own uncanniness. More / Less enemies than the usual, only rare/gold enemies, a lot of chests… The game’s not as generous in any of the normal floors.
Also the whole vibe of the game is oppressive, bar the final month. Though likely for what the game symbolizes towards.
I get the sense that the recent Resident Evil games are basically zombie-themed shooters rather than proper horror games, but I haven’t played them to confirm.
Depends on what you mean by recent. Some of the entries have definitely been more action horror than scary horror, but RE9 was a really solid blend of both, with lots of stealth required when playing as Grace for the first time, and that’s the most recent one.
8 was more action-oriented too, but 7 was actually pretty controversial for introducing a totally new protagonist for the purpose of recapturing the survival horror theme.
System Shock and Bioshock
Not a gory horror game but Alan Wake 2 has been making me feel a very certain way lately.
DEFINITELY the right atmosphere
Playing The Thaumaturge RN and it totally gives off spooky vibes but isn’t actually frightening
Dark Souls 1 cus you get to be cozy by bonfires
Darkest Dungeon
I’ve been playing Hungry Horrors. It is quite charming and based on British monsters/myths.
Dwarf Fortress with the Autumn Kingdom mod:

(I highly recommend watching Krugg’s DF content)
Team Fortress 2 for the halloween event(s).
I got Mouthwashing from a kind lemming and it certainly has vibes
MediEvil has a lot of spooky vibes mixed with its cheesy skeleton slapstick.
Halloween Harry
It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
