Wrap your listening gear around this, the opening track from GRUB’s self-titled album.
A new band to me, they’ve appeared over the horizon from Western Australia with a menacing, and hard-hitting debut album. I’m sure they will draw some obvious comparisons but I can also hear a lot of connections across quite a lot of Australian rock from the last 50 years.
If you want to know more about the band, here’s a 6 min interview from Australian radio.
which older aussie bands do you hear in it? curious about the less obvious ones
Hi, I am so sorry I didn’t reply sooner. It’s particularly busy for me ATM. I mentally wanted to write a comprehensive message with links and all but this will have to do…the things that I thought of when I have listened to this are stuff like the obvious comparisons to Amyl, The Divinyls and other female-fronted Australia bands (e.g The Grates, Magic Dirt), but also to “Oz Rock” oldies like The Angels. Other randoms, The Drones/Tropical Fuck Storm, Birthday Party, Celibate Rifles/The Saints/Radio Birdman, Shepparton Airplane, C.O.F.F.I.N, Cosmic Psychos, The Distillers/Brody Dahl.
Of course this is just my impression and YMMV
no rush, this is plenty. the angels is the one i would not have reached for, i hear the saints and radio birdman side of it long before the pub rock side. cosmic psychos i need to go back to with this in mind
@aesecakes@aussie.zone - Holy. Shit. Can’t stop listening to the whole record on Bandcamp so I just bought it. Thanks.
Uncomfortable, V8 and uplifting
Yeah!!
Thanks for replying and you’re welcome!
