Defence… Russia has shown how lackluster its standing army is. That’s not to diminish the losses faced by Ukraine. But they believed in their superiority that this three-day special mission has dragged on a little bit longer than they anticipated.

Bolstering our infrastructure is the best defense. And reducing our energy dependencies should be at the forefront. Something which heat pumps are excellent at. Between wind farms, subsidies for solar and heat pumps, we could have a weed ourself off the vast majority of imported energy. Even motor vehicles, a sustained push to make most if not all local traffic either public transport or electric vehicles would render us so much more resilient to the oddities on the current world stage.

Just in time for me to be able to afford the switch no doubt keeping me burning kerosene for heating for several more years. Excellent.

If you have the money just go for it. They won’t remove the subsidy for a while so still time to get it done. I did it 4 years ago when the grant was less than it is now and I have no regrets. Saved me a lot of money on energy bills.

Problem is I need to wait until I can put solar + batteries in first otherwise I’ll be paying probably more in electricity than I do in oil currently. It’ll be a couple of years before we’re at the point where we can afford all at once but the extra BUS money would have made it a lot easier.

That is unfortunate yes - we did the solar+batteries first and then added heat pump afterwards too, and I think it makes much more sense when you do all of them so they can work together.

I doubt they will withdraw the grant entirely in one go, and I suspect there will be something to replace it even if it’s less generous. Installation costs are also coming down too - for me the same install would have cost about 5k less to do today than 4 years ago, before grants are taken into account. There are way more installers now and they are somewhat more commoditised rather than bespoke. Hopefully that trend will continue.
