Before people start pulling out their pitchforks against all DCs, they need to realize that “normal” DCs aren’t inherently bad. Most likely this Lemmy instance is running out of a Datacenter. They let you take advantages of economies of scale with domain specific knowledge around power and cooling. You can buy cloud or colo your stuff there.
What is bad are the AI Datacenters, which are stupidly overkill on size, power and water usage. I’d love to see a site tracking those specifically.
The vast majority of datacenters are small nondescript warehouses near the airport.
I guess living in states with astronomical electricity prices and no affordable real estate was worth it after all!

It’s a bad map, not adjusted for area at all! Virginia is even worse than it looks on this map, probably Ohio and a few other eastern states too. Someone needs to fix it and if they’re posting the data publicly but in an annoying to access way (zip code lookup) then I’m skeptical it’s actually illegal. Disregard if that was a joke that whooshed me
