So there i was, hazy in between sleep and wakefulness trying to concentrate on a design problem (which i don’t think the dream directly featured but was tangentially related) and whenever i tried to focus on thst problem, i noticed that i’d have to stop breathing to produce the next word in the sentence or weave each syllable into my breathing pattern. Even when i’m typing this out it happens. You guys do it too, right?
No
Are you sure? Lowlander air drives me crazy. Too thick!
You poor horneaters, you even need help breathing!
Didn’t expect Cosmere content here but I’m stoked to see it
You need more, gancho? I have a cousin who can set you up with the good stuff.
Typically no. Though recently I had to get some neurological tests, including one, where you need to look at a changing pattern on a display, while electrodes check your nerves/brain activity. The assistent again and again told me to look harder. (Apparently they can see that in the graph of the nerve activity) And it is really difficult to look harder, so I stopped breathing while trying.
Not exactly as you describe, but this might interest you: https://www.npr.org/2024/06/10/1247296780/screen-apnea-why-screens-cause-shallow-breathing
I think it’s also an ADHD thing. I didn’t notice I did it until a partner in university would be like, “hey, you’re breathing funny” every once and a while 🤷♀️
Interesting read, but having read “Breath” by James Nestor, that book is basically a long ad for an orthodontic product named “Homeoblock”.
Huh! Interesting link, thanks
No, but, apparently I have to in order to sleep and it’s causing a bunch of problems.
Not usually no, but sometimes if I’m really deep in thought I realise all of a sudden I’ve been holding my breath without realising it because my head starts to hurt.
It’s random and I don’t have any kind of breathing pattern though.
On the contrary, if I notice my breathing, I find it distracting. I prefer to not be reminded of it, because it’s going to take me a while to stop intentionally breathing again.
I calm my breathing to focus at times rather than stop my breathing
yes
No.
