Basically as the title asks. It looks like the .wtf instance is down again, and I’m starting to think more seriously about hosting my own instance. I imagine I’d have to pay for the domain name, and for a server to host it, but are there any Peertube instance hosters that can confirm if there are other costs involved?
Edit: Looks like the .wtf instance is back up, so thanks to the admin for that! However I’d still take any advice I can get on setting up an instance in case it’s needed
If you have a small instance like mine with 20 users and only like 500 vids, you can get a vserver with like 512GB of space for less than 10€ including domain. I however recommend doing registration per approval only due to people wanting to spam sites with spam videos or upload stuff that is regionally illegal. I’ve had at least crypto scammers try to register on my site before but luckily there are certain things they are bad at hiding.
It probably greatly depends on what you plan to do with your instance.
My instance is just used by me and occasionally my partner and some friends. Running it costs me nothing aside from whatever portion my energy bill is increased by having the container active in my home server. I already had registered my domain for other things, but a domain is $10-$12USD/year, which is basically nothing.
Nice thanks! it would be nice to go all-out and have an instance anyone can upload to like the .wtf one, but I imagine that would be really expensive on server prices
Realistically probably less than 20 a month for a good cloud provided option.
With your own hardware, I ran mine for less than 1$ a month with an existing domain and hardware around the house. You dont need much other than storage. For single user probably next to nothing. For family and friends a bit more.
