I’m copying and pasting from another thread I posted in just a few hours ago on basically the same thing.
If you’re wanting a good faith explanation:
The folks who own guns are almost all conservative and live in red states where there is positive sentiment towards ice. The people who are protesting are all left wing and very likely don’t own a gun, and bringing a gun to a protest is easily how you make what could be a day of bruises and cuts into a day of bloodshed. I’ve been to several protests, and the big message is “don’t give them any reason to mow down the crowd”.
Let’s also consider why we don’t organize like they do in Paris. You get arrested? Fired from your job. You get fired from your job? There goes your healthcare. There goes your housing. Our resistance is slow, not because we aren’t passionate or are too complacent and dumb, it’s because the sad fact that sick, starving, and homeless people make for poor resistance, and I doubt anyone wants that fate.
The system we have is against us in ways far more sophisticated than what you deal with in other countries. We are surveilled by are government, controlled by our cops, and sold by our corporations. But we aren’t dumb. We aren’t weak. We see the hellfire and somehow still go out to do what we can, it’s just we are up against the most powerful domestic military force in the world.
Anyway, I gotta go teach children who didn’t ask for any of this. I don’t know how to keep it together, but somehow they do. If you’re in Chicago, I’ll see you in the streets next protest.✊
This is so true. The way I see it, there are two ways to shift the status quo. The less likely one is to build labour power by mass unionizing, thus remove many of those factors that make civil action so costly. The more likely one is for shit to get worse for enough people with nothing to lose that the price of civil action drops to zero for some 20-25% of the population. The world has seen that play out before - during The Great Depression.

I don’t think I believe this. The US has 1.2 guns per person including children. You’re telling me they are all owned by less than half of the adult population.
It’s not true in the least. The only difference between the left and right gun owners is you’ll never see Christmas cards of the family holding ARs coming out of leftists houses.
Talked to a US coworker today, they are to apathetic to gun violence or any violence that it hasn’t registered that the country is sliding into full facism
Everyone’s already pointing out “well doing nothing isn’t helping” but I’d like to point out there are many steps between Doomscrolling and Suicide By Cop, such as talking to your neighbors and joining community projects to build your local resiliency.
Go to the library or search up stuff like “charitable orgs [zip code/city/whatever]” and see what you can do. You can’t do anything if everyone around you is too broke and stressed, anyways.
I’m a confused on how the administrative and material supporters would be considered innocent. An accomplice is still guilty, and by the time unrest fully foments there will be no unwitting accomplices.
These people don’t get it. Im working with a magat that supports the killing… what can I do that doesn’t completely ruin my kids future? Attack him and get arrested? It isnt so simple.
When are the people going to fight back?

PS: the kids are alright
I cannot stress enough how vital is the work you are doing by teaching kids.
It’s paramount that we teach the next generation human values of kindness and solidarity.
They are probably the last generation to learn directly from humans, and not corporate controlled AIs.
Best wishes to you and keep on the good fight!

The average American gun owner has 5-8 guns.
Half of all privately held guns in USA are held by 3% of American adults.

Anecdotal but of all the gun owners I know, none of them own just one gun.
I just looked it up all the guns are owned by approximately 32% of the population.
I’ve been a gun owner for like 6 months, and it did not take me long to go from 1 to 3.
This is exactly how it works. You buy a hammer and you realize you need a saw, too. And a wrench would be handy. And i need a drill now, so…

And what will that accomplish? Suicide?

Better to fight back and die than let the fascists take over.
What did trying to leave peacefully accomplish? If they’re going to kill people indiscriminately anyway, might as well bring them with.
There are 22000 ICE agents and roughly 75 million Americans who voted for not this.
I’m not mathmagician, but that’s over 3000:1
You need to factor police numbers, drones, arsenals and ammo.

Better to die on your feet than live on your knees

Refute his bullshit with easily verifiable facts whenever thinks he has an audience among your coworkers. As calmly and rationally as you can.
Are doing nothing or attacking that particular man truly the only 2 options you feel you have available?
Let’s keep doing nothing until we can’t do anything!
If that’s the best you can do, then I hope you get better!
Yes.
Damn, I hope your brain gets better!
I might have a chance. Youre condition seems perm.
*Your
And nope, I can imagine many things besides those 2 options. Sorry you can’t. Hope your condition improves!
I can imagine myself on the moon, but that doesn’t mean I’ll be able to get there.
Go to hr and tell them his comments make you uncomfortable.
Nope, there is only:
Pretty simple mind your own god damned business.
