I’m a cismale hetero, so take it for what it’s worth.
My take on what you wrote is that it’s easy for those people to ignore their history.
If I hang out with my family, I’m going to hear the story of how my Aunt Pauline was in Washington to march with Dr. King or about how it was a big thing when the Army integrated.
That was the first thing I thought when I read your comment.
I think at first they were ignorant of their history. When they were told about that history, they actively ignored it and doubled down on their bullshit, to the detriment to their community, because money.
I was expecting their answers to be something more along the lines of, “The only way to change the republican party is from within,” or, “I’m fiscally conservative, but I am still trying to help push socially liberal republicans via how I vote in primaries.”

I can’t add anything to my previous comment, but here are a few things you might enjoy.
“A Game In Yellow.” Hailey Piper. Queer horror story set in Queens, NY. In my opinion, this is the best thing she’s done so far.

Joanna Russ. Came out in the 1970s, one of the first science fiction writers to do so.
I personally like “Picnic On Paradise.”

“A Walk To the End Of The World” Suzy McKee Charnas. So, so under rated.
