For people who don’t know, https://lemmy-federate.com/ is a tool that allows Lemmy instances to know about new communities created, avoiding the “this community does not exist” issue when trying to look up a community nobody on your instance subscribed to.
Piefed-side, Piefed instances monitor !newcommunities@lemmy.world to prefetch new communities on a daily basis.
It’s nice to see that now both types of communities can be fetched by both types of instances!

It’s worked with piefed for a while now, but it wasn’t working with piefed.social specifically. Turns out the problem was DNS.
Good to know, thanks!
Since you’re here could I ask about the fetching from !newcommunities@lemmy.world? It’s an interesting feature but it assumes LW will always be here, and moreso that specific community will exist. Is there a way to change the community it fetches from, for future proof?
I don’t see LW going any time soon. But I thought the exact same about lemm.ee and was proven wrong, which is why I’m asking. It also assumes that instance is federated with LW, which may not always be the case (as an edge case)
Yeah, when rimu added that, he basically said that it is easy enough to change or remove if needed. The community is just hard coded right now, but we have been having ongoing discussions about how to rework community discovery in general.
I love the way this project is developed. It’s very healthy and refreshingly pleasant even when tackling tough and complex issues, and the proof is in the pudding honestly, it’s hard to argue with the results: the software itself. Discovery is such an important piece of the puzzle that I’m glad people are taking the time to talk it through.
Thanks!
