Politics@beehaw.org•Kamala Harris says she’s ‘thinking about’ running for president again in 2028
182·15 hours agoNot a good idea.
I think Kamala got totally screwed over by Biden, I think there is a chance if he had stepped out earlier that she could have had more time to differentiate herself from Biden, but there just wasn’t enough time. A significant amount of voters didn’t even know Biden had dropped out it happened so late in the process.
That can be true along with the fact that Kamala is not the right candidate now and she won’t win. I say this as someone who criticized her heavily on certain issues but still voted for her because yeah Trump is a fascist.
Also… it isn’t because she is a woman it is because she doesn’t have a track record of being genuinely for everyday issues like housing, healthcare and genuinely progressive reform. There are better people for this moment. We need people like AOC, Rashida Talib, Ilhan Omar etc…
We have a lot of amazing women in politics in the US right now all the way to nearly the highest levels of power, Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton just aren’t the right people for the moment, it isn’t about them being women though yes the US is sexist as hell still.

World News@quokk.au•Dressed for school, returned in a shroud: Israeli forces kill Palestinian girl in class
5·18 hours agoThe point isn’t whether the violence is possible or not, it is that violence can never establish consensus in a democratic way no matter how evil of a despot it is aimed at.
What matters is changing the bulk of public opinion, resorting to violence whether you believe it is necessary or not immediately distances people from listening to you who aren’t already part of your group.
The way you build real power is by sticking to the simplicity of your values, I know people act like no one has any memory but actually I do think people notice when groups are consistent when others are hypocritical.
The polling in the US on a variety of topics shows it. Most people in the US in the 2010s didn’t hate Bernie but also they thought he was kind of silly and beating a dead horse with his points he made in speeches. Nowadays most people in the US whether they like Bernie or not admit he was right on a whole lot of issues. Outside MAGA the change has been major and quicker than one might expect in polling about how the bulk of the US feels on topics like healthcare, social justice, housing and the environment (core leftist issues).
There is also broad organized political resistance around campaign finance reform in the US that stretches across the left-right spectrum, I think Bernie’s approach to stumping on this issue in a broadly appealing way for years and years helped speed the growth of bipartisan support for campaign finance reform. A more “violent”/intimidation based approach would NOT have done that.
If leftists resort to unnecessary vindictive/intimidation based violence now that would just throw the policy goals of leftism into existential crisis.
I don’t need to hurt people to get them to listen to me.
I am not saying don’t practice self defense but understand the politics here.

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•Putin Announces Orthodox Easter Ceasefire With Ukraine: Kremlin
12·2 days agoI think russia will hold to it only because it is just another day to stock up shahed supply for a larger strike, but I still think there is a symbolic use to this and Ukraine isn’t going to be sitting still per say… so I actually think this might hold but it isn’t because I trust russia/putin’s word.
I hope this is a sign towards movement towards more negotiation, like actual negotiation not just slapping Ukraine in the face and trying to get Ukraine to give up things it cannot.

31·2 days agoI have met, befriended, looked up to, been attracted to, despised and made amends with many jews in my life living in the US. How could I ever look at such a breadth of human experience I cherish uneven as it may be and draw any conclusions about it? Especially negative?
On the otherhand the far fewer amount of people I have met who support Israel as a primary part of their identity and politics were NOT the kind of people I wanted to keep hanging around.
…because Slartibartfast didn’t hand design them like he did for earth?

World News@quokk.au•Israel dismisses calls to add Lebanon to US-Iran ceasefire | AFP
4·2 days agoIsrael has sabotaged this ceasefire unsurprisingly.
You ever check up on these cute and heartwearming stories about moms coming home and having a bunch of kids awhile later?
I lean in and after looking around with a paranoid expression whisper in your ear - They all end up dead in the creek, UPSTREAM from the waterfalls, something is fishy about this…
I think it would be best if the show was presented as a festival for podcasts with a string of live performances in a beautiful old theater. What you don’t tell the podcasters is these two will be in the wing loudly interrupting well you do technically tell them you just put it in the annoying small text at the bottom of the agreement they sign.
It is a terrible idea, but also a fantastic idea.

3·3 days agoTrump cares and he doesn’t care. Trump is a mad king. We cannot make the massive mistake of assuming because Trump is unarguably a coward that this means he will will always back down from further escalation. Even if he always intended to coward out by de-escalating he is such a dementia addled idiot that he might just fuck it up and escalate by accident. He is also an old crazy fuck who isn’t far from the grave from his poor health, don’t expect him to necessarily act rationale about anything it is entirely within the realm of possibility that Trump might attempt to use a nuclear weapon on Iran abruptly for no good reason. Let us treat that danger seriously while celebrating what appears to be a de-escalation.

Most people who are intelligent know that buying pretty much any other brand of EV is a better choice so I am sure you can get Teslas cheap right now.

2·3 days agoWow what a surprise it failed?!???
Don’t these obsessive rightwing projects of micromanagement expanded into a violent and pervasive state of control by overconfident vastly powerful men usually work out perfectly?
I am shocked!
They probably weren’t worshipping strength and productivity over everything else in their lives hard enough.
My personal armchair opinion is they should try it again but this time have less empathy for the weak and downtrodden who don’t fit into the plan. Then it will surely work! I know this because I am a rich and powerful businessman and that makes me less naive than everybody else.

This is not over yet, there is no reason to believe Trump will stick to this and Israel IMMEDIATELY violated the terms of the ceasefire.

919·3 days agoI mean there are a whole lot of fascists in Germany…
I might go as far as to say German culture is the least capable of resisting fascism in Europe based on the last ~150 years of history. Which doesn’t mean all Germans are like that but Germany has a serious weakness towards becoming broadly enamored with fascism. (I live in the US, to be clear I see the US very similarly).
Of course Elon Musk is going to be popular with fascists in Germany. This is the same old shit over and over again.
I will say the idea of Germans buying shitty, badly made US cars because they are made by a company owned by an inept fascist is pretty funny in a dark way.

Why do people think the majority or even a large percentage of people in the US at this point will die on the hill of their sexism and racism?
Some of those people exist but most people want to hear a politician speaking to real things, they don’t have the energy to engage in the degree of identity politics bullshit the DNC and DC class of pundits seem to think everyone does. Even if you are somewhat sexist or racist if someone is promising you well thought out cost of housing policy reforms at a certain point you have to look after your family and support it to keep a roof over your head.
Sure MAGA cultists won’t or at least won’t get caught doing it but that isn’t the point. It is about speaking to everyone else.
A woman can absolutely win the next presidential election, there is a good chance our best option is a woman. It comes down to how the next presidential candidate can speak to the issues that are crushing everyday people.
