  • Well see, that’s the thing, GrapheneOS itself is fine, I really don’t have any doubts about that in the near future (long term is another thing, but that’s less so due to Graphene’s actions and more so about Google’s). Though CalyxOS was my true favourite, with it on hiatus currently I am fine with using GrapheneOS, I enjoy it a lot actually. I may stick with it even if/when CalyxOS does come back. It’s not perfect, I do wish they integrated more of LineageOS’s features into it like CalyxOS did (they won’t, but I can hope at least), and because of the enhanced security measures app installations (from any source) seem to take far longer than on CalyxOS. But overall, it’s been a very good experience.

The devs themselves are extremely toxic to outsiders, but at least they do see quite willing to help out those who do use GOS, I’ve never really seen any major complaints there. For the long term, I know the GOS devs are rather critical about the Linux kernel underlying the Android OS (because yeah, ofc they are…), so there’s some talk of them eventually making their own OS. That’s the point I’d leave and go elsewhere, because the only other option besides Android I’d try is a Linux-based mobile OS, not some creation of the GOS team that I imagine wouldn’t be fun to deal with. But again, that’s likely a long ways off, save Google doing something really dumb (dumber than what they’ve been doing recently I mean).

  • CalyxOS was the same way. The GOS devs (and Daniel in particular) made CalyxOS sound like it was created by the Devil himself. Yet, on the flipside, the CalyxOS team typically had little if anything to say about GOS. I think they were even complimentary of some of the things they did. The GOS devs really like creating their own form of “Satanic Panics” to then have an enemy to fight against. Which is a shame because otherwise GOS is a fantastic creation overall, it’s what I’m using now that CalyxOS is sorta on hiatus.

  • People malicious towards us are also using it as an opportunity to spread libel/harassment conteM targeting our team, raid our chat rooms and much more. /e/ and iodéOS are both based in France, and are both actively attacking GrapheneOS. /e/ receives substantial government funding. Both are extremely non-private and secure which is why France is targeting us while those get government funding.

Ya know, I’d take this claim a lot more seriously if this wasn’t the 100th time they’ve claimed this about someone, or basically anyone, that isn’t them… I like GrapheneOS, I use GrapheneOS, this is being typed from a Pixel running GrapheneOS… But the developers have long since been known for being extremely toxic in nature towards anyone and everyone they deemed as a challenger. CalyxOS (what I used before), LineageOS, Murena, iodeOS, even the Linux kernel itself… Not to mention the personal attacks on people like Louis Rossman.

I want to take these claims seriously… But unfortunately I can’t without actual, legitimate proof.

  • Same old story, GrapheneOS’s self-rightousness has caused them grief before (plenty of times actually), and this is just another example of it. Compare and contrast with something like CalyxOS, or even just Vanilla LineageOS, and it’s night and day for being able to support more devices and be less reliant on Google. And I say that as a guy who loves his Pixel 6 Pro with CalyxOS.

GOS is a great idea, and I’m glad it exists, but ultimately they are their own worst enemies about a lot of things. Micay obviously wasn’t the whole issue there either (though he certainly bears a lot of responsibility for what made Graphene and its community so toxic for several years too…).

  • Umm… How old is this meme? You haven’t (really) able to play PC/Steam games on Mac for a while… Also, XFCE hasn’t been a serious contender for a DE (save for a lower end hardware spec) for quite a while now.

This meme might have made more sense if it was comparing to Windows. Comparing it to a Mac now is comical, especially since a lot of Adobe software doesn’t work quite right yet on M* series Mac’s yet (though it is better than at launch).

  • If you’re going for a similar Fedora-like experience, with it being a rolling release that is still stable, then OpenSuse Tumbleweed is definitely you’re best bet.

Now, if the rolling release nature is something you’re less attached to, then some good options would be Pop!_OS (especially if you have an Nvidia card), another Ubuntu-spin like Kubuntu perhaps or even KDE Neon, and maybe Debian 12. Though for the last one, although it’s a fantastic distro, it looks nice, new, and shiny now, but in 6-12 months when you’re not even half way through the Debian upgrade cycle and still on old software, will that bother you? If the answer is yes, then look elsewhere. Otherwise, Debian 12 may be a good choice for you as well.
