Diversity equity inclusion

I’m a super white lady living in a pretty multicultural area. Sadly I feel like I mostly experience the opposite here from my non-white friends. Those with names from their ancestral culture (is that a good way to put it? Not sure) either ignore our mispronunciations or simply adopt western names. I had a coworker from Shanghai whose name I always said wrong because of the inflection. It makes me sad that they kind of give up trying to teach people to pronounce their names correctly, but at the same time, I get it. It’s a lot of constant work and some of us white people, or other non-whites from different cultures, just aren’t going to try or see why it’s important. I probably wouldn’t force the issue either if it were me, but man, what a constant way to feel othered.

Or in school names, like U Dub for University of Washington.

Babylon 5 was too melodramatic for me. I hated Vir but by my memory, his and G’Kar’s acting in the final seasons was admittedly a master class. Everyone else was overdoing it, especially Delenn.

41 and had to look it up. My parents watched that show though! I remember that they watched it but nothing else about it.

I’m guessing this was a grown adult? I volunteer at my kids’ school and I’ve seen some extremely impulsive behavior from eight year olds where they clearly didn’t think about what would happen if they pulled some stunt that popped into their heads. Dropping the comfort bar sounds like that kind of thing. No thought about who it might affect; just hey, that’s something to do. It’s not even something cool, it’s just something. Like WTF???

Interesting— growing up in California, I feel differently. I’ve never seen a tornado before but I think I’d be way more spooked by that than an earthquake. But I’ve been through plenty of earthquakes, including in the middle of the night when they woke me up, so they don’t really phase me. The only scary thing is that, unlike weather, you don’t know they’re coming. But they’re also over pretty quick (usually).

This is mine too. I was six and lived in San Jose also. I don’t remember the earthquake itself but I have very vivid memories of the rest of the day, talking to neighbors, cooking dinner with the propane camp stove, candles, and hazy TV after midnight when the power finally came back on.

I was a plaintiff in a civil lawsuit against a huge company. It was so rigged. The judge had overseen the class action lawsuit that we opted out of and acted like we were ungrateful little shits. But never in front of the jury; in front of the jury, he was all perfect law and order. But when they weren’t there, he was so obviously biased. I lost basically all faith in our justice system (USA). And I only had money on the line; for someone in a criminal case, it would be sooo much worse.
