Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most unique/different book you ever read?English
1·5 hours agoMany of Stephensons books are like that. I like Snow Crash for the world building that obviously went into the writing, but you have to figure it out along the way.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a word or concept in your language that does not translate very well to English?English
1·9 hours agoBoth of those translations require multiple words. And no, the gryffindor dining room is not hyggelig.
Also, it’s not only in danish. Somehow the word became famous as a Danish word.
Teaching dems a lesson by not voting sure paid off

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Gamers of Lemmy, how do you mouse on the couch?English
2·12 hours agoMy usual gaming position is in my livingroom couch, keyboard in lap, mouse on the pillow next to me, and feet on the table next to my laptop. Mouse works fine in the couch. As long as it’s not a reflective surface, it should work fine. Mine is cloth, so it’s no problem.
Protip: I travel a lot, and often find myself in hotel rooms, trying to operate a mouse while in bed. Because I always travel with a plastic cutting board (regular white one I found at a shopping mall in Bahrain). It works well as a mouse pad, for when the sheets are no longer stretched perfectly flat. It also fits perfectly the bottom of the pelicase in which I carry my laptop.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's one item in your home that's at least 20 years old that you still use?English
4·11 hours agoOff the top of my head:
- Two of my guitars
- Living room table
- The steak knives (our cutlery in general is somewhat new, but the steak knives are ~30 years old)
- I’m sure I have misc cables older than 20 years. Network, serial, IEC, etc. And yes, I use serial cables often.
- Our kitchen stove is around 20 y.o., but the kitchen is next up on the renovation agenda, so it won’t be that much longer
- Does my GF count?
- I have some really old clothes that I still wear. One example is the Soilwork band shirt, bought at a concert when they were touring for their newest album “Natural Born Chaos”
- A guitar pedal with a 60s style distortion (the pedal is from the 90s, though)
- We live in an old house, so many of the lamps are pretty old too.
- My basement toiled was installed in the 80s

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a word or concept in your language that does not translate very well to English?English
4·2 days agoFjøs is specifically where animals are kept. Låve is more generic, but it’s usually where you store stuff such as hay and produce. Sometimes the two are combined into one building and It’s common to refer to the ground floor as Fjøs, and the floor above as Låve.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a word or concept in your language that does not translate very well to English?English
14·2 days agoFjøs is where farm animals are kept. “Barn” is more general and translates to “Låve”, while Fjøs doesn’t really have an English translation.
Nisse is a mythological creature that is part goblin, part santa, part Gnome, but not really either of them. They’re usually benign and pretty cool.
Hygge (noun) /hyggelig (adjective) means having a cosy, lighthearted or fun atmosphere, usually in company of others
EDIT: By the way, Nissen lives in the Låve
