Games@lemmy.world•You Don’t Look Like a Gamer: On Toxicity, Gatekeeping, and Women Who Share Their Gaming Lives Online (my article)English
64·11 days agoI grew up hearing that what ever game I enjoyed, “was not a real video game.” And this was IRL, from people I knew and thought as my friends, at the time. If I tried to continue, it turned verbally abusive and my fave games got properly shitted on. So I learned to stay quiet and play only offline games, just play my lil games alone. These days I got real friends who’d like to play with me, but I’m too shy to go online… Like I want to, but just too afraid. It’s really fucking dumb.

Climate@slrpnk.net•Plant-Based Mince Now 29% Cheaper Than Beef at Tesco as Meat Prices ClimbEnglish3·13 days agoI add plenty of oil in the pan and some onions, then add the dry TVP, mix well, add all the spices, let fry until it looks “right” and then I add water/veggie broth or canned tomatoes, depending on what I do. This works with small or smaller texture or “mince-type” or so.
With big, steak-like pieces I do soak them in hot water for like 5 minutes before frying, but never boil.

(Never boil, always fry with spices and then add a little bit of water/veggie stock/tomato sauce…)

3·16 days agoJust a polite reminder that if you only need to print a few papers, it’s probably cheaper/easier/free to use the printer at local library! Mine does it for like 15 cents a paper, or for free if you have your own paper! Much less hassle than buying a good printer, sorting the ink situation and then fighting with that machine…
I think I break more. I don’t use makeup and wear very boring clothes and we have strong religious cults around here, so I’m always expected to be one of those cultists - until I open my mouth and start swearing.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why is society at large okay with euthanasia for pets but not for humans?English
641·21 days agoReligions and doctors “vowing to protect life.” Especially religious doctors “vowing to protect life” even when the life means just pain and suffering that can’t be properly eased with pain meds either, because you know, the dying person might get addicted to the meds. That’s obviously worse.
In my country, when an elder person is too sick and “ready to be euthanized”, they just stop giving them water and let them dry to death. It can take weeks. They do give some pain medication, but there is no way of knowing what amount is enough. You’d imagine that dying that way is pretty damn painful yet they don’t have a way of communicating that. But if they OD’ed, it would be murder so better let them suffer!
But also, euthanizing animals is becoming more taboo too. Many pets live in pain, relying in “pet mobility carts” and medications. Antidepressants for cats, epilepsy meds for dogs… Vets prolong the suffering for money, for people who can’t accept facts and do the kind and right thing. Animals have no way of communicating about side-effects from medications. Endless rehoming is thought to be better than letting go.

4·21 days agoWell, kinda. Depends a lot on where you live. My soydrink and egss would freeze fast if I put them outside at -40°C. And spoil when it suddenly gets warmer to like +1°C… It would take monitoring and I would need to build a bird/vermin proof case/box, but I have thought about that in the past and it is something I have used in my advantage when I have cleaned and thawed my freezer.
I do have cellar which I often use as an extended fridge tho, I just need to monitor the warmth. (Summer it can get as warm as +8°C, winter it can go as low as -1°C.) And at my family’s cottage we do have an old ground fridge. It’s like a cement “box” that has lots of ground and plants growing on top/around of it.

I think I block too much stuff with uBlock… Not just adds, everything that annoys me.
