One of the screenshots of the Facebook profile literally says “The Transgendered World”. I think it’s safe to assume this person is some degree of trans. And you have no idea if said sister is related, you’re making assumptions.

You should take this post down. Even assuming the best case scenario, it’s not cool to poke into someone’s life like this.

This is kind of fucked up to post, why did you stalk a transgender person’s alter ego and maybe post their actual sister’s name? You’re allowed to have inside-thoughts without validation from the internet you know.

It’s not the paradox of tolerance to feed people

My guy we are talking about basic needs to live. It’s not tolerating intolerance to make sure people don’t starve. No one is doing an ideology means-test at the food bank line to make sure you don’t have shitty tweets first, you know?

And further, I also don’t think homophobes should experience homophobia nor racists racism, because that perpetuates the systems of homophobia and racism and hurt more than just assholes. It may be ironic when it happens but it’s not good. There are other ways of pushing back against intolerance than using that intolerance against them.

Especially when there is enough for everyone, you can feed someone without endorsement.

Every time I see a ban like this, I have to wonder how many families did the math and decided that their girls actually don’t need an education outside the home, or their wife doesn’t need a job or to go grocery shopping herself, and all of them will just have to rely on their male relatives their whole lives to take care of them. Policies that force people to dress outside of their cultural acceptability leads to isolation, not integration.

I think that, regardless of the other extremely valid criticisms here, this inconsistency issue is one of the dumbest moves politically because it turns him into a liar to both sides. If you support trans people, he’s either lied in his support for trans people in the past or is willing to lie about it now to get elected. If you hate trans people, he’s covering up his past and manipulating you for votes- you could never 100% trust him to enact your hateful policies with the background he has. Both would be unenthusiastic to support this candidate, and all he’s done is burn the goodwill of people who were happy to support him a week ago. Can you imagine if he critiqued the question’s premise like Al-Sayed or stood his ground in support of trans people instead? Really seems to be shooting himself in the foot here.

Zotero is legitimately a lifesaver. I’m not even in academia and I use it constantly. If you have a crazy number of (mainly pdf) documents to tag, organize, highlight, etc. it’s so worth it. I’m thrilled for v10!

I think you’ve misunderstood my point here. I’m not saying that data centers care about renewable energy, quite the opposite. I’m saying that the buildout of renewables has lead to enough surplus energy (in the intention to replace fossil fuels) such that tech companies said, what if we use that cheap power instead, and built up the demand for that power such that fossil fuels are not decommissioned but even increased like you pointed out. Off-grid power for data centers is because this demand is outstripping even the excess supply right now because everyone is demanding a piece of the pie. It’s wholly unsustainable and when it hits a wall it is going to be ugly.

That’s what I’m saying we’ve been doing, except that demand has increased so the fossil fuels stay online instead of getting decommissioned.

And I think it’s no coincidence that this is when we’re seeing a big AI push. We’ve had machine learning for at least 20 years now but have had to be precious about the resources we can afford to go to that kind of compute (I still remember “donating” my screensaver compute time to SETI and genetics processing). Now that it’s not completely unfeasable thanks to renewable energy, every tech company and their mom is all in. We truly need an energy budget for the planet or we’re just going to be circling the drain indefinitely.

Renewable energy is making significant headway in new power generation. The problem is that the increased supply is being met with new demand from manufacturing and data centers. If we can reduce that demand as we continue to build out renewables, we can decommission fossil fuel power generation at huge rates. The sooner we can set up regulations to prevent capitalists from just setting up more demand where this cheaper energy is produced, the sooner we can meet the goals clean energy production meant to achieve.
