I think you’ve misunderstood my point here. I’m not saying that data centers care about renewable energy, quite the opposite. I’m saying that the buildout of renewables has lead to enough surplus energy (in the intention to replace fossil fuels) such that tech companies said, what if we use that cheap power instead, and built up the demand for that power such that fossil fuels are not decommissioned but even increased like you pointed out. Off-grid power for data centers is because this demand is outstripping even the excess supply right now because everyone is demanding a piece of the pie. It’s wholly unsustainable and when it hits a wall it is going to be ugly.

And I think it’s no coincidence that this is when we’re seeing a big AI push. We’ve had machine learning for at least 20 years now but have had to be precious about the resources we can afford to go to that kind of compute (I still remember “donating” my screensaver compute time to SETI and genetics processing). Now that it’s not completely unfeasable thanks to renewable energy, every tech company and their mom is all in. We truly need an energy budget for the planet or we’re just going to be circling the drain indefinitely.

Renewable energy is making significant headway in new power generation. The problem is that the increased supply is being met with new demand from manufacturing and data centers. If we can reduce that demand as we continue to build out renewables, we can decommission fossil fuel power generation at huge rates. The sooner we can set up regulations to prevent capitalists from just setting up more demand where this cheaper energy is produced, the sooner we can meet the goals clean energy production meant to achieve.

I think you are misapplying the principle of “words are how you use them” here; “his husband” is used not-infrequently and is grammatically valid to any English speaker. There is nothing to correct in the original text.

What this is using, however, is statistical frequency of use, which is a different thing altogether. And you know what relies on statistical frequency of language like this? LLMs.

English is full of words and phrases that have secondary meanings, and even obscure or contextual meanings that are real and correct! We cannot cede less popular language choices to AI spellcheck or we lose our own voices and experiences. Acknowledging that gay people exist is a tiny microcosm of this, but it’s important in many other ways too.

The way that the full body scanner works, is someone looks at you visually first and genders you (entirely separate from gender markers on IDs). If you pass as a woman, they hit the woman button which tells the TSA agent looking at the body scans to expect things like bras but not to expect external genitals. So if a trans femme without bottom surgery goes through, she gets flagged for having a penis and another TSA agent has to make sure it’s not a concealed explosive or something, meaning said trans femme gets groped in the process. However, if the TSA agent sees a scan of a woman wearing a menstrual pad instead, that’s just a cis woman on her period, no pat-down required.

Alternatively, if someone passes as a man, they will get flagged if they are wearing a bra. So planning to navigate TSA the easiest may involve using gendered clothing to unambiguously pass as well.

For the TSA body scanner specifically, trans femmes can avoid a pat down by using a menstrual pad, just fyi!

No one needs to justify their existence. Existence is valuable in and of itself, not derived from what you can do or be or experience.

Once upon a time when the internet was small and niche, this may have been true. Now, it’s a firehose of information that is constantly available in your pocket. It’s healthy to curate that space to reflect your interests in your precious little time on earth. If you want to pop your bubble so badly, go out and talk to people! You’re not incorrect to feel that way, but for context, this is a republican primary. The only people voting for this are the ones without enough shame to have changed their party affiliation in the past 1-10 years, so there’s definitely a sampling bias in these specific results. We won’t know what the rest of the voters want until November.
