4·8 hours agoYou’re completely right. But if Russia’s able to prop up a failing, increasingly repressive regime in Iran for years, it will be such a nightmare for Iranians. Malevolent fucks.

World News@lemmy.world•Trump says US has begun ‘major combat operations’ in Iran after Israel launches strikes - liveEnglish
7·1 day agoA central goal of the first joint wave of strikes in Iran was to hit as many leaders as possible, according to three Israeli security officials familiar with the operations.
The officials said that, similar to the previous strikes in June last year, planners took into account that they would manage to achieve at least some degree of surprise. They calculated that if they wanted to kill senior Iranian officials, they had to try and hit them in the first round of strikes. Afterward, it is highly likely that more precautions would be taken to protect the leadership.
Videos verified by The New York Times show strikes in an area of Tehran that houses the presidential palace and Iran’s National Security Council, among other important government buildings. Another video shows a strike near Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence.

8·3 days agoThe lines are pretty frozen at this point but the issue isn’t that Russia doesn’t want to negotiate. They are suing for peace but they’re negotiating in bad faith and then inventing crises to derail the process they’re pretending to participate in.

World News@lemmy.world•A war foretold: how the CIA and MI6 got hold of Putin’s Ukraine plans and why nobody believed themEnglish
2·4 days agoHad this one in the hopper to read all week and just finally got around to it. What an incredible read. Thanks for sharing it, HellsBelle.
Whatever else you can say about Biden, the effort to bring attention to this and herd European cats was really historic in a way that I think few will probably ever appreciate. It’s also so wild that the closer anyone was to the center of conflict, the less likely they were to believe war could happen. And to such a degree that one group is planning meetings while the other is evacuating from Kyiv.
The entire piece is such a fascinating read.
Wow that’s incredible news! Congrats! So glad you’re back 🎉

I’m not saying they were negotiating in good faith. Personally, I don’t think they were. But they’re still called ‘negotiations’ because they were taking to each other. That talking preceded the attacks. There have been articles for days about the talks not going anywhere.
