Many of them also have a Russian and a French name and switch between them depending on context. I listened to the whole thing as audiobook and it basically took me the whole first book (of 4) to get a vague understanding of the characters. Listening helped a little bit because the reader had a slightly different intonation depending on which character was speaking.
