Fuck AI@lemmy.world•I Set A Trap To Catch Students Cheating With AI. The Result Was Deflating
1851·2 days agoThe only problem I have with the whole “Don’t be afraid to fail” thing, is that so much rides on the grades a student receives it makes it very difficult to not treat every assignment as a highly critical task which must be as close to perfect as possible. I totally agree with this professor and I believe he did the right thing by the students. The problem is the system itself.
Those who are going to outsource their work are likely to always outsource their work or take the path of least resistance. You can’t moral lesson or embarrass that away, usually. But the rest of the class seems to have learned a valuable lesson, or at least learned how to cheat better.
Regardless, we need to stop having everything boil down to the grades. There’s good reasons grades are important, but there are even more that are detrimental. I don’t know the answer, I just know the system is broken. Maybe it’s just capitalism that’s broken.
100% agree on both counts
The ONLY money I spent during my entire time at uni has been on these stupid Cengage and Connect courses. I blame the teachers, more than anyone, for using these awful services. I also blame the Uni for not advertising that it would be required for the coursework. The teachers are either too lazy or too overworked to make their own materials or teach from an analogue book which doesn’t spoon-feed the lessons and grade things for them. It’s a shit system and nothing made me madder than a required class using these services.
For a few of them, I just lobbied the department to pay for it saying I wasn’t able to afford it, and they paid for my license or whatever.

News@lemmy.world•Nursing is no longer counted as a 'professional degree' by Trump admin
5·7 days agoAgreed, but lets be real, none of them would ever set foot in a publicly available health institution. All high-end private care for the rich while we get to pay out the nose for band-aids and autism tablets.

News@lemmy.world•ICE Suddenly Loses Key Evidence One Day After Being Sued
1021·7 days agoSounds like a win by default for the plaintiffs, if I were the judge. Somehow, I doubt it will go that way or that easily, but in a sane or just world, any destruction of evidence, whether purposefully or by negligence (by not having the information backed up in duplicate), is a straight-up tacit admission of guilt.

6·7 days agoSame. No way I could let that slide. I’m almost more upset that no one else in that room had the dignity to stand up on her behalf. At a certain point, the job can get fucked in favor of principals. There’s some things you don’t compromise on or justify your way out of.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•DAE in their 30s/40s/50s not really feel like an adult?
13·8 days agoIt’s right around the time that you realize your parents were just doing the best they could and didn’t know how to “adult” either that you start to understand that you’re destined to do the same thing. We’re all just making it up as we go and hoping to do better than the previous generation. Generation after generation built upon the knowledge of iteration.
So yeah, mentally, I don’t feel significantly different than I have at any other time in the past twenty years, aside from knowledge and experience, but I also realize that I’m viewed significantly different by others, so you kind of have to act the part and fake it till you make it.

News@lemmy.world•California just passed 5 incarceration labor bills–what could this mean for other incarcerated labor?
3·8 days agothose in opposition believe the bills will cause pressure on jails to increase compensation for other incarcerated labor. Is it time for full incarceration labor reform?Oh no! We have to increase our wages literally above that of slave wages. What ever shall we do in this multi-billion dollar industry?
I have negative sympathy for these fucks. I worked for $0.30 and $0.45 per hour for a few years, just to give them it all back at the commissary.

10·13 days agoI feel like you’re purposefully ignoring everything that’s being said. I understand what you’re saying, but it isn’t applicable in this case. It’s just a PC man. A Linux based PC. There’s nothing mandatory about using steams services on the hardware, nor given the announced architecture, could they enforce such a requirement.
Linux ≠ Android. One is open source, the other is not. And to add, it’s pointless to discuss what might happen on a theoretical piece of hardware multiple generations away. You might as well argue that Windows will go open source in 2035 based on the fact consumers never pay for it for home use.

14·14 days agoHomie you’re having a completely different argument than the rest of us. It’s been explained to you like 3 different ways now. Not sure what else to tell you, so yeah. Believe what you want to believe, big dog.
How do you explain piracy being a perfectly viable option to game on this new console? You never need to buy the first game to use this machine effectively.

Games@sh.itjust.works•Are you ready for a $1,000 Steam Machine? Some analysts think you should be.English
14·14 days agoYou’re not seeing the forest for the trees. Just because other game distribution vectors lack market share does not mean there are no alternatives to Steam. People have options, but they overwhelmingly choose Steam based on the quality of their product and service. If others decide to improve those things or a particular game is better priced or contains more content on another service, the consumer is free to choose that distributor.
Market share is completely irrelevant in this case.
If I had known I could make a living just telling blatant falsehoods in an angry way, my life might have turned out a lot differently.
I do enjoy being able to sleep at night, though. So maybe it all worked out for the best.

8·16 days agoI’m just over it at this point. I’m tired of expecting anyone to stand up to this clown. Either I’m missing a big part of the puzzle or the leverage this guy has on everyone in DC is unprecedented.

Nobody was talking about using tools to arrive at objective answers. Math, at least at the lower levels, doesn’t require creativity. Writing is something wholly different. When you are outsourcing your writing it no longer says anything about you. It’s creatively bankrupt.
I’m not wholly opposed to AI. I realize its an inevitability. But at least in this case, especially for writing, you’re only cheating yourself. So yeah, I think it is embarrassing to outsource that type of work.
