News@lemmy.world•This programmer wants to use your phone to fight ICEEnglish
3·3 days agoFor the record, I concur with you 100%. But to play devil’s advocate here, it seems like those who are meant to uphold the laws have forgotten why they existed in the first place, and likely won’t even comprehend them unless they or someone they know experience first hand the injustice of others disregarding those laws.
Basically, maybe they need to be reminded why rules matter.

Games@lemmy.world•PS6 and Xbox Project Helix "will start at a 50% higher price" than PS5 and Xbox Series X, predict analysts following Sony price hike – and $999 "is not impossible"English
11·3 days agoI imagine it won’t do console numbers, but I’m sure there will be enough fans and early adopters to justify the added expense of a 2026 launch. However, I’d like to think the popularity will grow organically as the system gets older and prices start dropping again.

12·3 days agoAs a long time PS customer, the Steam Deck has been probably the smartest/luckiest impulse purchase I’ve made. I used to not have a PC backlog, but now I own a PC port of pretty much all my favorite console games PS4 and backwards, among others, and the majority of those purchases have fallen under the “might-as-well-at-that-price” category of expense. I’ve been playing on Deck nearly every day since I got it and have only scratched the surface of library I’ve built since buying it.
I added the three cats from the last panel as stickers on my iPhone.

24·8 days agoThe bubble must be showing signs of weakening.
This might be good on Steam Deck for multiple games that have carry-over data. Just mirror the save data folder of one proton directory into that of the follow-up game’s directory. I assume you can go back to the first game to unlock more stuff to carry over, and not have to manually copy-paste the save folder each time. Just run a sync.
Interesting take, but if you’ve got a group of boomers in a classroom, and another with 14-17 year olds, which of the two groups do you think are most likely to start pulling out phones before the hour is up?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What slang term did you learn as a kid that is no longer in use?English
1·15 days agoThis is truer than you might think. A lot of slang developed out of a need to express oneself without having the vernacular (or even desire) to clearly articulate. It leads to innovating interesting (and in some cases more practical) new ways to say something in a way others (typically in your in-group) can understand easily.
I suspect a lot of that crazy Gen Z stuff comes from kids getting into social media well before fully developing their own social skills, so it just started manifesting through terms and phases they picked up from video games and such.

News@lemmy.world•‘You are all worse than each other’: anti-regime Iranians turn on TrumpEnglish
1·15 days agoI’m not saying any of this is justification for what Trump is doing, just that it’s understandable why people who fled their country might be excited to see change happen. So much so that they would willingly cheer him on. I had an Iranian friend flat out tell me the Americans could take most of the oil and it would still be a huge win for the Iranian people compared to what they have now. They want their freedom. They’re happy to see the guy who kills people getting killed, and I think there’s room to empathize there.
Does that make sense?

News@lemmy.world•‘You are all worse than each other’: anti-regime Iranians turn on TrumpEnglish
57·18 days agoThis comment makes me sick.
I dislike Trump as much as the next guy, but for Iranians this is their home, their culture, their families. Of course they wanted to believe it would be liberated. Of course they bought into Trump’s lies because this is the closest chance at freedom they’ve had. What choice would they have? No don’t fight the authoritarian regime that displaced them?
Kindly go take your racist-ass victim blaming elsewhere.

Games@lemmy.world•Crimson Desert Includes Denuvo DRM, To Nobody’s DelightEnglish
6·19 days agoOkay just ignore the personal anecdote on how a little bit of piracy actually helped create a long-time paying customer of multiple franchises, I guess.
(gollumnotlistening.gif)
But furthermore…
When Denuvo survives for at least 12 weeks, piracy leads to nearly zero total revenue loss on average. The results suggest that Denuvo does protect legitimate sales to an estimated mean of 15 percent of total revenue and median of 20 percent, but there is little justification to employ Denuvo long-term (i.e. for more than three months), especially given that Denuvo can have negative technical side effects and is generally disliked by users.
The study itself, linked in the article, states that Denuvo is effective at protecting sales for only about 12 weeks, then it does more long-term harm than good.
If that’s the case, I wonder how much Denuvo suppresses sales of a game over its lifetime once those 12 weeks are over?

You’d fit right in with maga with logic like that.
