I didn’t pay for access but the abstract seems pretty solid, and the blog post I linked (by the same author) lays out a pretty convincing line between 20th century white american masculinity and support for fossil fuels even in the face of their economic obsolescence.

It’s great work, I just question the wisdom of using academic terminology in op-eds. Like obviously the fascist is going to throw stones but why oh why would you willingly hand them a bigger rock

I understand the academic roots and I’m sure the paper it was coined in is top tier sociology. But we have got to stop labeling bad shit as masculine, it only amplifies the behavior. The dude 6" off your bumper is not going to hear “petro-masculinity” and have a quiet contemplative moment about carbon emissions and road safety. He’s going to feel scolded, hear that you’re triggered and frightened of his masculinity, and then he’s going to start driving even more aggressively out of spite. And nobody will stop him, because nobody with the power to do so cares. Hell, the cops themselves are often the ones who drive like this.

I have seen coyotes, and they’re not scary in the slightest unless you have a smaller animal with you. Coyotes are scrawny little bastsrds but they’re devious. What’s not folklore is that they’ll absolutely eat your pets and livestock if you give them a chance. They are, in many situations, pests.

Because most people do not follow the news very closely. They learn enough to form an opinion, often against their will, and then try their hardest to pay attention to things that don’t torpedo their mental health.

I don’t have a source to point at but I think the first trump admin, followed by covid, broke people. There is no good news and no clear action to take to make the bad news stop. So people tune out. Some news slips through with their FYP or whatever but even then what they get is predigested and filtered so that the emotion hits hard and goes away fast. The most popular form of media is designed not to inform, so people are not informed.

I tend to be fairly sensitive, and I haven’t been very successful in quieting my own kneejerk defensiveness when “yes all men” and “male tears” come out. A lot of feminists are justifiably angry but I don’t have to stay in a room where I don’t feel welcome.

So I tend not to label myself a feminist even though I agree with feminists on most things. I vote for feminist candidates, I’ll defend feminism when people tell lies about it, but I can’t be a feminist myself because I can’t participate in it.

I do not see the problem. You could bump both of those down to 20 and she’d have a 10y/o grandkid. Multiple grandkids even.

E: Aside from all that, teen pregnancy happens, and while it’s not ideal it also doesn’t make the mother some kind of untouchable pariah.
