I would not take a laptop backpacking, but if I had to, I suppose I’d probably try to use something small and ARM based to get better battery life (but, more likely, I’d just use a phone instead which is smaller and waterproof).

It kinda depends on what exactly you need to do though. Can you provide us with more details? What do you need the laptop to do?

What kind of backpacking are we talking here? Going into the wild for weeks or months at a time? Going on a little vacation through cities in Europe?

I think it’s safe to assume they mean the “through various countries” type of backpacking. I’m not sure anyone doing the other type of backpacking is bringing a laptop.

I guess with what little I know about the nature kind makes me think anyone planning to do it would know you can’t afford that extra weight. Also having no way to charge it without adding even more weight. From what I understand these people plan things down to the gram.

They do, but they also have lightweight solar panels they attach to backpacks, etc.

It doesn’t seem too unreasonable to save weight on everything else and bring a laptop for writing. A lot of thru hikers will be in town every few days for a “zero day” of 0 miles hiked, but did the laundry, repaired gear, bought groceries, charged the phone, etc.

But on the other hand you’d need to take a lot of time off from hiking to write to make it worth it.
