The same things that happen when all the firsts in a thing are gone. Change.

The first musicians, the first tv stars, the first movie stars, the first AAA games, etc. When those… “Heroes” are gone, those anchor points are lifted and start to disappear.

When Total Biscuit died, gaming lost a weirdly lot of something. I’m honestly not sure what, exactly. But something was lost. He wasn’t really the first, but he was the first modern big one. His influence still floats around, and a lot of people never followed his advice (like to not pre-order games or buy shitty dlc and to vote with your wallet), but when he died, it was like a resisting force was lost and Microsoft went full bore shitty.

Gates has left Microsoft, but after he dies, what will Microsoft become? They have a firm structure of their corporate identity, already. But like when Jobs died, everybody could tell that Apple changed. A lot of the magic was gone.

And like how Sir Patrick Stewart has just died, I think Star Trek, and possibly hope, will begin to change…

Anyway, maybe with GabeN, when he leaves or dies, Steam can decide to stand for the good parts of itself and carry on that legacy. Entropy into MBA ants is inevitable, so we must fight it. All of us. Actively and continually.

Remember, everyone: do your part, don’t be an ant. Be better than an ant.
