Man, fuck that. Kids who are young enough to not know any better becomes everyone’s problem. Every year when I fly trans-Pacific, I end up sitting next to sick kids. They’re too young to practice even polite coughing. It’s just open-mouthed germ spreading the entire flight. I’ve gotten sick every single time. The last time, I ended up coughing so hard that I herniated a disk. Why do I have to be considerate to them and the same consideration isn’t afforded to me? If your kid isn’t old enough to be in society, don’t take them on planes.

I was on a flight from São Paulo to Orlando, which is normally 8 hours but take off was delayed by 2 hours. From the moment the doors closed until the moment I got off the plane, a baby was crying about 5 rows behind me absolutely non stop. 10 full hours of screaming bloody murder. I can understand the baby’s discomfort but holy fuck

I think more people would tolerate crying babies if they realized those infants are currently experiencing the worst thing in their lives and they have no idea what it is or how to make it better.

Here’s a tip for anyone suffering of crying babies on a plane: remember that at least it’s not your baby, so you don’t have to try to calm him/her down while a bunch of annoyed passengers around you are giving you looks.

If it is your baby, you’re out of luck. Gotta just deal with it, I guess.

It’s so common though. At least in America it is. I once walked into a restaurant and there were two kids play-screaming in the back. Parents didn’t give a shit. We walked out.

On airplanes, some parents let their kids roam free. This is why iPad parenting is so effective. Shuts them up, even if it eats away at their future.

I remember when my brain flipped from being upset about it to feeling sorry for the parents. It was like after I graduated school and I was like, “wow, those parents can put up with so much”

Anybody that gets upset about this can buy ear plugs and eye masks and stuff. Shits dirt cheap and useful when you’re traveling in general in case your hotel or friends place or whatever has issues. I get upset too but like, I don’t know what trip they’re going on for whatever reason… for all I know it’s a death in their family and they can’t leave the kid alone … I prefer to think the best of it and prepare that way.

I don’t get upset about the baby crying. That’s just a baby being a baby.

What I get upset about is when the parent yells at the baby for crying. As if that would do anything other than make the baby cry harder. Maybe they think it’ll show the passengers that they’re trying to do something? It only shows that they have no emotional intelligence and are probably not stable enough to raise a child. Especially when the yelling is accompanied by shaking.

Yes, I’ve seen it. On a plane.

Even if it isn’t a death in the family, people deserve to be able to go on a trip now and then. The only thing worse than a crying baby is a crying adult. I get it’s annoying but that’s life sometimes.

Everyone else can put on their ANC headphones. The parent(s) of the baby have to try and calm down the baby. That ought to be fun on an airplane. As a parent I’ll tell you that the only way I’d have flown when my kid was still in the crying every time something is wrong phase would’ve been if there was truly no other option.

If you go on a long flight and don’t bring ANC headphones, that’s kind of on you.

Literally said that I never did and I suspect no other parent would do it willy-nilly either, so there’s almost certainly a good reason. But seriously if you fly without proper headphones you’re asking for noise anyway, a baby crying isn’t even that much noisier than the airplane itself. You can also just upgrade to first class if you think you’re more important than everyone else.

…I did say “literally”, this isn’t a blame situation.

Modern air travel is already basically no fun for anyone. Everyone’s restless, cramped, and inconvenienced. The baby has the usual baby issues that can make it cry plus the same uncomfortable pressure in their ears we all experience without knowing what it is or how to cope, loss of routine, unfamiliar noises and lights, even less opportunities for a diaper change, etc. The parent(s) have to deal with that in addition to themselves, other passengers have to endure extra noise… Again, everyone is less happy in that situation, but the baby can’t suck down 4 Bloody Marys and put on headphones to stay zonked for several hours!

Here’s a tip for anyone feeling embarrassed by their crying baby on an airplane:

Stay the fuck at home or take a road trip, next time. Nobody else paid $400 to listen to little Jaxleigh shriek at the top of their lungs for 6 hours, and the entitlement of dragging an infant onto an airplane ought to be what actually embarrasses you.

The only entitled person here is you, who somehow thinks that the rest of society should bend over backwards to accommodate you.

The thing is, if you want to use public transport you have to accept that other people are also going to use it, often at the same time, and some of those people will happen to be babies, who are a normal part of society.

If you don’t like that, then either buy a private jet, or get over yourself. You were once a baby, we all were. And I’m sure you cried sometimes just like everyone else. It’s just a normal part of life :)

You exist in a society, so you do sign up for those sacrifices. That crying baby may be the nurse that changes your bed pan in 40 years and whose taxes will pay for retirement and healthcare for you.

Them taking a baby on vacation is an assumption. People fly for other reasons. And even assuming it’s a vacation, parents actually dont want to take babies on vacation believe it or not.

You exist in a society, so you do sign up for those sacrifices.

Fuck that. A screaming baby brought to a public place and where it can’t be taken outside when it starts to be a nuisance to everyone around is every bit as anti-social and entitled as a blue tooth speaker blasting music at full volume.

Plan ahead. If you’re hellbent on ending every interesting part of your life to become a diaper slave, then get your travelling out of the way before you start. Plan for family to come to you or tell them they’ll have to wait til the kid is old enough to fly without being a public nuisance. What you shouldn’t get to do is bring your loud, smelly little bioweapon into a metal tube with hundreds of other people and make it everyone’s problem at 35,000 feet in the air. Idgaf how inconvenient that is for parents, we should really make parenthood a lot more inconvenient in general so people will actually give it some due consideration before opting in instead of acting like there’s nothing psychotic about just deciding to keep an unplanned pregnancy on a lark like it’s an interesting knick knack from a thrift store.

But if I spend the entire flight screaming in someone’s ears, I get to go to jail for it afterwards. If we start locking up the entitled parents when their children do something that would get an adult arrested, I’d be a lot less militant about children not belonging in public spaces.

They consider themselves (at a minimum) entitled to disturb the peace with impunity. They consider themselves entitled to bring a screaming child anywhere they go, regardless of how appropriate or not it is to bring a child. You would never again think parents aren’t entitled if you’d ever in your life tried to carve out a space away from them. Look at the reactions to any suggestion a wedding not need to have children present, or any other solemn occasion, mombies and daddicts lose what passes for their minds as soon as you put up an “adults only” sign. They want that sign taken down, and if it’s something that’s actually harmful to their kids and not just some adults wanting peace that they can invade with their shrieking germ spewers, then they want it banned altogether.

Every vice banned to protect children, and every restaurant with table cloths whose owner is afraid to put up a “no children under 12” sign are a testament to the entitlement of parents. It’s a force of the universe only slightly weaker than gravity.

Jaxleigh and Reighlynn are real names. Using unnessecary English language weirdness to make them “ImUnique”. Its not clever.

Its just how people name kids now. Like how theres tons of Aiden and Hunters. Its the new “Bob” and “frank”. For white suburbanites.
