If there’s no news in the next week or two, I’m gonna be looking to spin up a successor based on the same principles. Mander.xyz is my favorite part of the fediverse by a mile, and the spirit is worth keeping alive.
If anyone reading this has sysadmin experience and is willing to help out, I’d love to make it a joint project; feel free to shoot me a DM.
To do that well, the post history should be reconstructed. A couple large nodes would possibly be subscribed to every mander community, so they would have a history of posts and comments which could then be reconstructed. Sadly, I think the software to do that does not exist:

Still down, and the fossilesque account that was one of the most prolific posters appears to be deleted.
How would you know if it’s deleted, if the server is down?
I’m still not entirely sure how all the coding about the federation works, but if you try viewing a different mander account through your own instance (eg https://programming.dev/u/Sal@mander.xyz) you can still see the account, whereas the fossilesque page says deleted.
Does it actually say deleted? Since my instance does not have a cached copy of Sal’s profile it shows an error when I try to view his.
You can check through other instances if you’re curious. Like I said I don’t know much about fedi coding but when a user (or post) is gone on .zip and others I’ve seen it doesn’t say deleted it just gives an error page. Sal’s page is still visible but there’s an error for fossilesque.

It was a mistaken post removal and they’ve been busy. It’s possible that @Sal@mander.xyz has not noticed the instance is down yet.
I have been neglecting the instance very aggressively due to being busy this summer.

Yes, of course! Moderators are gold. I need to make a better effort at recruiting.
I suppose sooner or later (end of the month maybe?) mander will be back up, until then I’ll be using my alts.

This makes me realise it would be useful to know the admin’s handle of instances while they are offline. In principle, would be good if the Lemmyverse scraper bot would grab that so it’s in the public dataset.
